Everything else is disposable, evil, and people are either obstacles or useful idiots. We’ve seen a perfect example of such overweening pride in the recent pontifications of Supreme Court supreme being Anthony Kennedy on the evilness of the opponents of gay pseudo-marriage. Mark Steyn calls him “Supreme Intergalactic Emperor Anthony“. Indeed. Says Mark:

Obama is not Hitler– he’s worse, because he has at his beck and call all the power of the bloated nanny-state, a radicalized and political bureaucracy, a law-breaking security and surveillance apparatus, and the will to trample all opposition, reality, God, and due and human limits of every kind. The Greeks called it hubris, which inevitably summoned nemesis.. due consequences.. humbling reality.

She is a siren– one of the classical temptresses who tried to lure Odysseus and his fellow sailors to their doom on deadly rocks.
Here is our amazingly powerful human tendency to see evil as good, to fall in love with evil, and to see it as good, and then to be captured by the lie we have fallen in love with. So what?
Well, aside from damnation, deception, politics, and other real things– such self-deception led to World War II. The leaders of Britain– and thus, the moral leaders of Europe– fell in love with peace, with smug Edwardian dreams and schemes, and lived not just in ignorance, but in open denial of the rise of European fascism, and all that it meant as the victorious allies squandered Versailles, the League of Nations, an overwhelming military advantage against Germany.. and squandered it over and over and over until the worst war in world history was unavoidable.
Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This
Self-deception is sweet, captivating, and very human– the siren-song can afflict individuals, political and chattering classes, whole nations. And not just once, but over and over.
Obama is a siren: and he’s very good at it. He is not about the world as it is, but sells sweet dreams of free stuff and total control; the EUrocrats sell insane dreams of Eutopia; the technological world of digital clickety boom-flash is a sweet beguiling dream of deception and distraction, as is much of the internet.
So.. Sleepy..
Just waking up– having truth without faith– is a screaming nightmare. Thus, if faith fades, the dreams become sweeter and sweeter until people never wake up, and don’t want to. We must have some sense that the universe is greater than our problems; that providence still orders the life of men and nations; that God is actually involved and interested in the lives of individuals, before we can wake up and not be overwhelmed.
Thus, the first task is always the same: do good, for the love of God. The second task is still the same: let people see your life shine, and so know that God shines through you. The failure of the churches remember God is dangerous, alive, not a pet or a label for our favourite social theories.
Where We Is
The failure of the Left and right both come through forgetting human frailty, and that sweet dreams of markets and of total control are both sirenism, not reality. Christians did not transform and remake the ancient world through super-markets or confiscatory taxes and social programs.
The siren-songs are strong, until conquered by love & repentance. May God awaken us before we stay alseep forever. ~

A few weeks ago, a school-kid took a somersault spill off the steps right in front of me. I ran to him, kept him down (he was dazed disoriented, and trying to get up), and got someone to run in to get one of the teachers who had first-aid training. While that went on, I held up my coat to shield him from the sun, and kept talking to him.

One of the fails in the modern system is the notion that Somebody Else Will Look After That™. We can NIMBY or bystand or run away.. somebody, somewhere will do the basic humanly decent thing, won’t they?
That’s what happened to our sensitive new-age guys in the Ecole Polytechnique mass-murders by Gamil Gharbi. He told the men to leave, and they did. Women died. As Mark Steyn said:

What Would You Do?
Not all of us are equipped for super-heroics, but this was not that circumstance. Drinking? Mild drug-use? Yeah, the police have seen it before. But who is so inhuman as to simply walk away from a dead friend.. or acquaintance.. or even a stranger? “If that were me…”
Yes, I’m one of them. The human beings. Failing, imperfect, a mix of contradictions.. but basic decency is just.. basic. Pre-speech, pre-civilization, cuz next time it might be you needing help, and a basic policy of helping the others means you may be helping yourself someday, too. Plus, doing the right thing is.. the Right Thing™.
Religiously & philosophically speaking, the principle here is: Do not withhold doing a good if it lies in your power to do that good. If someone is in need, you respond.
Finally, And In Conclusion
In the Parable of Lazarus And Dives, Dives The Rich Man won’t even throw the begger Lazarus the leftover table-scraps. Lazarus sits sick and hungry in the street, and a dog comes and begins to lick his sores.
Now, that is actually a good thing: dogs clean one another’s wounds, and comfort sick members of the pack. My own dog– Wee Wallace The Uber-Poodle™– does exactly the same thing for me… he can tell when I’m sick or in pain, and does the right thing. And he’s a dog.
Where have we come to, when modern urbanites don’t have the basic character of a dog, or a caveman? ~
