eCigs 60% more effective than patch, also prohibitionists full of crap
An article appeared in the Guardian today out of the UK. A study out of University College London found that when looked at objectively, e-cigarettes were about 60% more effective for quitting over using the patch. The study also goes on to note that much of what prohibitionists claim about e-cigarettes like the gateway theory are unfounded.
When the results were adjusted to account for the differences between the smokers in terms of background, age and other variables, those using e-cigarettes were around 60% more likely to quit than those using nicotine replacement therapy or just willpower.
“It is one piece of the jigsaw and not a final answer,” said West. “It may be different in different countries. If it [use of e-cigarettes for quitting] continues to grow, we will expect a public health benefit.”
He said there were misconceptions about e-cigarettes. “Despite what a lot of people think, e-cigarettes are not good news for the tobacco industry and the tobacco industry would like them to go away. They sell tobacco and would like to go on doing that,” he said.

Zippo Sues Blu
In a press release today, the parent company of Zippo announced it filed suit against the electronic cigarette arm of Lorillard. The suit alleges that the brand name Blu infringes on Zippo’s claim on the name for its blue flame butane lighters. The company alleges that it tried to work things out with the cigarette maker prior to filing suit against the company.
“Despite our attempts to resolve this matter amicably, Zippo has been compelled to seek the Court’s assistance to protect our BLU trademarks,” said Zippo President and CEO Gregory Booth. “Zippo is instantly recognizable because we have long understood the value of our brand and the need to vigorously protect it against use by others. Our BLU trademarks are similarly valuable and will be similarly protected.”

Minnesota Moves Send Business to South Dakota
Minnesota’s track record for less than friendly electronic cigarette regulation might start costing the state in terms of jobs and tax revenue. Some e-cigarette businesses are setting up shop in neighboring South Dakota according to one article. Even though the state backed down on some of its more aggressive anti-vaping legislating, the uncertain environment seems to be making business owners uneasy.
Tlougan says the kiosks alone brought in $4,000 a week. The new regulations is pushing shop owners like Tlougan to look outward for better business opportunities, and he sees South Dakota as an untapped resource.
“South Dakota people are a little bit behind on the technology and seeing what it is. A lot more store fronts in the last year have boomed in Minnesota versus South Dakota,” Tlougan said.
That is quickly changing. Three other vaping shops already exist in Sioux Falls alone.
