This year is no exception, as there is no shortage of Cabaret material, according to co-directors Paula Salky and Katy Rumley.

Whether it’s the moose family on the mountain, the latest ski town shenanigans in The Record, or the lack of snow in February, everything and everyone is fair game, and Salky and Rumley are looking for ideas and talent.

After four years of directing Cabaret and many years participating as a cast member or with the tech team, Salky and Rumley have perfected the "how to make a memorable show in 10 days or less” strategy of planning. Unlike other community events that require months of rehearsals, Cabaret prides itself on getting a group together and putting together a show that encompasses music, dance, video and comedic skits.

Community members interested in performing on stage for Cabaret will be asked if they can commit to the rehearsals April 29 and May 6 to 10 as well as the show performances on May 11, 12 and 13.

“I love directing this show, and we never know who is going to show up,” Salky said. “We have had people who have never performed on stage, haven't performed since their kindergarten graduation, have severe stage fright to others that can't sing on key, have two left feet to the cast members that have auditioned for The Voice, played at Carnegie Hall and performed in professional theater.

“We never know what will evolve from the auditions, and many stars from the Super Fun Show to the Chief Players began in Cabaret,” Salky continued. “It’s a great way to participate in theater, get involved in the arts scene and support the Steamboat Springs Arts Council.”

For those wanting to become part of Steamboat’s theatrical tradition, auditions will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 1 and from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 5 at the Chief Theater, 813 Lincoln Ave.

Those auditioning should be prepared to introduce themselves and show off their talents through singing, playing a musical instrument, dancing or acting.

"I am looking for people that have the desire to inspire, perform and be a part of the Cabaret team,” Salky said. “It’s important that they are dedicated and committed to making the rehearsals, take direction from the directors, and most importantly, get along with others and collaborate with the group.”

And anyone who has skit ideas is welcome to email those to ssaccabaret@gmail.com with the subject line, Cabaret skit.
