Jewish congregation set to celebrate high holidays
The Jewish Congregation of Steamboat Springs will celebrate the high golidays, led by Rabbi Mark Asher Goodman, at The Ranch, 1800 Ranch Road. The Days of Awe. as they have come to be called, celebrate God’s role as master of the universe. They emphasize morality, self-examination, spirituality and holiness.
Rosh Hashanah services begin at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2. The service will be followed by a Kiddush. Members and friends are asked to bring traditional food, such as apples and honey and honey cake.
On Monday, Oct. 3, the service will continue at 10 a.m. It stresses the concept of “return to God” who, in his mercy, is willing to receive the penitent, forgive his/her sins and offer the opportunity to begin the new year with a clean slate.
Kol Nidre, the opening night of Yom Kippur, begins at 7 p.m. Oct. 11. It is considered the most sacred day in the Jewish calendar and is observed as a day of contemplation, fasting and prayer.
On Oct. 12, services begin at 10 a.m. and continue through the day, including a seminar with the rabbi.
After the Neilah service at the end of the day, the shofar is sounded to signify the beginning of a new year.
The congregation is invited to join a Break the Fast celebration following the service. Traditional food will be provided by Har Mishpacha. Members and friends are asked to bring sweets and desserts.
Routt County United Way ’16 Campaign Kickoff nears
Routt County United Way will host a 2016 Campaign Kickoff Celebration from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 at Haymaker Golf Course. The event marks the beginning of the organization’s annual fundraising campaign in Routt County.
This year’s campaign fundraising goal is $525,000, and Routt County United Way hit the ground running with last week’s $20K Day, which raised $52,125, including a donation of over $20,000 from Yampa Valley Bank and their employees.

LiftUp of Routt County in need of food bank supplies
LiftUp of Routt County is in need of personal items for its food bank. Toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper, dish and laundry soap and razors are currently in short supply. Donations can be dropped off at the LIFT-UP offices, 2125 Curve Court.

Hayden Congregational Church Food Bank distributes free food to those in need.

Routt County commissioners call-in line offered to all
Routt County commissioners have established a call-in line enabling people to listen in live to public meetings held in the Commissioners Hearing Room at the Routt County Courthouse in Steamboat Springs. People are invited to listen to the meetings, but there is no capability to take public comment. The call-in number is 970-870-5499.
Free, confidential Medicare help provided to community
The Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Colorado has established a new local office to provide free, confidential counseling to anyone with questions about Medicare.
The office is located at 3001 S. Lincoln Ave., Suite E, and the local phone number is 970-819-6401.

Residents reminded about online license renewal
Colorado residents who renew their driver’s licenses or identification cards online will now receive a newly designed card.
Renewing online allows customers to avoid visiting a Department of Motor Vehicle office. It also offers individuals the opportunity to update their current physical and mailing addresses.
Individuals may renew their driver license up to two consecutive times online. The most recent photo on file with the DMV is used when renewing online.
Last year, only 29 percent of eligible residents took advantage of the online renewal option. Individuals are encouraged to renew online for their convenience.
Colorado unveiled the new driver’s license and identification card at three pilot offices in March. All driver license offices across the state are issuing the new design.
Rules governing dogs in public reviewed for residents
With the arrival of spring, the city of Steamboat Springs is reminding residents of local rules regarding pets in public areas.
■ Dogs should be leashed in most public areas. Also, it is not OK to leave dogs tied up along the sidewalk. The city considers dogs left unattended to be “at large,” even if secured by a cord, leash, chain or other means.
■ Though most public places require dogs to be on leashes, there are two off-leash parks in Steamboat Springs, Rita Valentine Park and the lower pond along Spring Creek (where the gazebo is). Dogs are still required to wear a leash on the trail to and from the lower pond, at the upper pond and on all other parts of the trail located on city property. As the trail moves into county-owned property, dogs can be off leash, providing there are no signs posted to the contrary, and that the pet is within sight and under voice control. Owners should have a leash on hand and be prepared to put it on their pet should an officer request it — as in the case of dangerous wildlife in the area.
■ For the continued enjoyment of everyone on the trails, owners are asked to pick up dogs’ waste and dispose of it properly in a sanitary container. Most public trails and parks provide bags for animal waste disposal.
■ Ensure it is easy for a lost pet to be returned, and remember to keep pets’ shots up to date and license pets each year at the Routt County Humane Society Animal Shelter or at a Steamboat Springs veterinary clinic — dogs are required to wear their licenses on their collars.
