Yampa Valley Sustainability Council is offering a free home weatherization clinic from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15 at Strawberry Park Elementary School, 39620 Amethyst St. Participants will learn affordable steps to make homes more energy efficient and comfortable this winter.

The event will include information sessions about a variety of weatherization measures, including installing quick-fix items, such as hot water heater wraps and programmable thermostats; converting to air-tight canned lights and LED tubes; and air sealing around windows, doors, crawlspaces and attics. Free LED lightbulbs, free Energy Saver booklets, energy efficiency giveaways and affordable radon kits will also be available for participants. For more information, visit yvsc.org.

Photographer to hold community conversation

Bud Werner Memorial Library and Yampa Valley Photographers Club present a conversation about craft, entrepreneurship and adventure with National Geographic photographer Jim Richardson at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15 in Library Hall, 1289 Lincoln Ave.

Richardson has photographed more than 30 stories for National Geographic, and his work takes him around the world, from the tops of volcanic peaks to below the surface of swamps and wetlands.

Local photographer Scott Bideau will moderate a Q&A session via Skype with this globetrotting photographer who manages worldwide adventures based out of Lindbsorg, Kansas, a town similar in size to Steamboat Springs.

In addition to taking audience questions about the craft of photography, Richardson will talk about the ongoing challenges of running a business from a small town, what it takes to cover everyday life while traveling the world as a journalist and his witness to the global agricultural obstacles in feeding a hungry planet.

This event is free. For more information, visit steamboatlibrary.org/events.

YVSC plans America Recycles Day activities

Yampa Valley Sustainability Council will celebrate America Recycles Day today with free reusable bags and pledges to recycle hard-to-recycle resources

YVSC volunteers will hand out free reusable shopping bags at City Market and Safeway at noon Tuesday, Nov. 15, and students at Soda Creek Elementary, Strawberry Park Elementary and Steamboat Springs Middle School will make pledges to recycle as part of their America Recycles Day celebration. People of all ages are encouraged to take the “I recycle” pledge online at americarecyclesday.org/pledge.

The following resources are available for hard-to-recycle items.

■ Political signs: Political signs can be recycled with plastic grocery bags at Safeway, City Market or Walmart. Steamboat’s Sears Hometown Store, 1755 Central Park Drive, has offered to collect the metal political sign frames for recycling as scrap metal.

■ Scrap metal: D & D Enterprises and Waste Management accept scrap metal and appliances without freon for a fee. Axis Steel also plans to collect scrap metal in Steamboat for free, but its public collection facility is not open yet.

■ Paint: Ace Hardware and Sherwin-Williams accept 5 gallons of paint per customer per visit at no charge.

Visit yvsc.org for more information about hard-to recycle items and an A - Z Recycling Location Guide in Spanish or English.
