Oak Creek residents will experience two scheduled power outages at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28 and at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1. Both outages will last from 10 to 30 minutes. Commissioners establish call-in public meeting line
Routt County commissioners have established a call-in line enabling people to listen in live to public meetings held in the Commissioners Hearing Room at the Routt County Courthouse in Steamboat Springs. People are invited to listen to the meetings, but there is no capability to take public comment. The call-in number is 970-870-5499, and the next meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29.
Steamboat Ski Town Lions Club meets 2nd, 4th Tuesdays
The Steamboat Ski Town Lions Club now meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at The Egg & I restaurant from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The group is one of Steamboat’s oldest civic organizations, chartered in 1923. Meetings are open to members as well as those who are interested in learning more about the Lions Club.
The Steamboat Ski Town Lions Club is made up of civic-minded men and women of all ages who identify needs within the Steamboat Springs community and work to fulfill them.
Throughout the years, the group plans or participates in numerous events and programs. It collects eyeglasses for those in need throughout the world and provides free vision screening for youths in Routt County schools and at health fairs. It supports United Way Day of Caring and the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. It provides scholarships for high school seniors and funding for local youth groups such as Rocky Mountain Youth Corps.
Highlight events include its annual Thanksgiving turkey drive, highway cleanup days, participation in the Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup, Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast and Hot Air Balloon Rodeo. The club’s largest fundraiser is its annual Christmas tree sale in November and December.

Power to Parents workshop continues through Nov. 11
Power to the Parents, a seven-week active parenting workshop series, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays from Sept. 30 to Nov. 11 at the Boys and Girls Club of Steamboat Springs. A program of Routt County Youth Services Coalition, the series, facilitated by Laura Cannone, LCSW, will include such topics as
■ Methods of respectful discipline
■ Skills for clear, honest communication
■ Strategies to prevent risky behavior
■ How to be an encouraging parent
■ Insight into issues such as youth online, drugs, sexuality, bullying and depression
Cost of the series is $60 per person or $100 per couple. Dinner and a parent guide book are included, and scholarships are available.

The Copper Magnate reminds Routt County residents that it is against the law to throw away anything with a cord. The Copper Magnate does offer a newly permitted free metal and electronics public drop-off site.

Inspiration classes open for registration at Emerald
Emerald Mountain School is offering three Inspiration Classes this fall for second- to eighth-grade students.
■ Brazilian Jiu Jitsu helps students build confidence, discipline, strength and agility. Instructor Dave Marrs is offering sessions from 4 to 5 p.m. Mondays for second- to fourth-grade students and from 5 to 6 p.m. for fifth- through eighth-grade students. The class will run today through Oct. 26, and the cost is $160.
■ Knots and Beads will meet from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Fridays for third- to eighth-grade students. They will learn how to use different kinds of string, knots and beads to make unique necklaces and bracelets. This class runs through Friday, Oct. 2, and the cost is $80.

Program encourages kids to hike, bike to school
The Steamboat Springs School District and Bike Town USA Initiative are teaming up for the 2015 Safe Routes to School program. Thanks to a generous grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation, this program aims to get more kids out hiking and biking to school this school year.
New this year is the Hike and Bike to School Challenge. It began with the first Hike and Bike to School Day on Friday, Sept. 11, and will continue each Friday throughout the school year. Students will use in-class posters to tally the days they “commute” by hiking or biking to school. Prizes will be awarded to kids who commute at least five days during the year. Additional prizes will be awarded for most days commuting, and a grand prize drawing will take place at the spring Safe Routes Bike Rally at each elementary school, with a great prize going to one lucky commuter at each school.
All kids in kindergarten through eighth grade at Soda Creek and Strawberry Park Elementary Schools and Steamboat Springs Middle School are eligible to participate in the program, even if they ride the bus to school. Bus riders can be dropped off (with signed permission slip) at Steamboat Springs High School and hike the last 3/4 mile to school on Butcherknife Trail. Hikers and bikers can also follow other specifically mapped safe routes. All routes have adult volunteers posted to ensure safe crossing at significant intersections.
