Native Excavating is preparing to begin construction on two county roads, Routt County Road 14 and Routt County Road 27.
Construction began Wednesday on C.R. 14 and will continue through most of August. The road will be completely closed from Monday through Aug. 2. During this time, only local traffic will be allowed. There will be a marked detour with signs to direct the public around the construction site.
The road will reopen to traffic on Aug. 3, with a tentative completion date of Aug. 20.
Truck and trailer traffic is strongly discouraged from utilizing this route for the duration of the project. The area of construction will begin roughly at the intersection of C.R. 14 and Henderson Park Road and continue north to the intersection of C.R. 14 and Hibbert Lane.
Construction on C.R. 27 began Wednesday, and currently, the road is completely closed approximately 6.5 miles north of Oak Creek on C.R. 27. The area of construction will extend approximately 0.1 miles north on C.R. 27. Crews expect the project to be complete by Aug. 7, and the road should be reopened to normal traffic on that date.
Hayden graduate completes basic training in Air Force
Air Force Airman Samantha M. Huffar graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Huffar is the daughter of Christa Huffar, of Brighton, and Jeremy Piper of Randleman, North Carolina, and sister of Austin Piper, of Casper, Wyoming. She is also the granddaughter of Alan and Connie Piper of Thornton, Sandra Huffar of Brighton, and Shirley Christensen, of Gwinner, North Dakota.
The airman graduated in 2010 from Hayden High School and earned an associate degree in 2014 from Pima Medical Institute of Westminister.
Registration deadline nears for tennis tournament
Registration deadline for the upcoming Steamboat Tennis Association Annual Championships is Sunday. The tourney will include divisions for adult and junior singles (including orange and green dot) and men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
The tournament will be played July 24 through 26 at The Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs.
Tournament fees include player gift, Saturday night player’s party and Sunday night dinner at Steamboat Springs Community Center.

This event is the major fundraiser for the STA, which is the primary funding source for junior tennis teams in the Yampa Valley.

LIFT-UP of Routt County is in need of personal items for its food bank. Toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper, dish and laundry soap and razors are currently in short supply. Donations can be dropped off at the LIFT-UP offices, 2125 Curve Court.
Volunteers needed at Steamboat Art Museum
Steamboat Art Museum is looking for volunteers to assist in greeting visitors, assisting in special events or working in the museum’s store.
Shifts are 3 1/2 hours, one day per week Tuesdays through Saturdays during the summer and winter exhibits.
Perks include getting to enjoy the fabulous art exhibits, meeting exhibiting artists at exhibit openings, free admission to all Saturday lectures during exhibit opening and meeting visitors from all across the country and world.

Guide provides resources for home owners/seekers
The new Colorado Housing Financial Assistance Guide provides an array of resources to those across the state who face challenges staying in their home or finding a new place to live.
The comprehensive guide provides information about more than 100 organizations across Colorado that offer financial support for those in need of housing help. The guide is available in both English and Spanish at caahq.org under resident resources.
The resources are organized by region, covering the Denver metro area, Southeastern Colorado, Northern Colorado, Boulder and the Western Slope.
The guide is provided as a public service by the Colorado Apartment Association, along with additional support from the Colorado Association of Realtors, Colorado Housing and Finance Authority, Colorado Housing Connects, and the Colorado Division of Housing.
“Fortunately, there are many organizations doing great work to provide housing assistance but tracking them all down may be hard,” said Nancy Burke, vice president of government and community affairs at the Colorado Apartment Association, in a news release. “This guide pulls all these resources into a single source, organized by geography, to help Coloradans access them quickly and conveniently to find the help they need.”
Two statewide helplines can provide a good place to start for those seeking help. They are the Colorado Housing Connects Hotline at 844-926-6632 and the Colorado Foreclosure Hotline at 877-601-4673.
VNA: Act to avoid mosquito bites and West Nile virus
The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association offers the following precautions against mosquitoes, which can carry West Nile Virus.
■ Drain standing water where mosquitoes lay eggs. Empty old tires, cans, flower pots, clogged rain gutters, rain barrels and toys where puddles occur.
■ Limit outdoor activities or take precautions during dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
■ Dress in long sleeves and pants in active mosquito areas.
■ Insect repellents containing DEET are effective in repelling mosquitoes. Always follow label instructions and precautions. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends not using insect repellent on children younger than two months old and not using repellents containing more than 30 percent DEET on children. For tips on safely using insect repellents on children, go to healthychildren.org (type “insect repellent” in the search box).
