The Steamboat Pilot & Today is accepting letters of interest from readers who would like to serve as community representatives on the newspaper’s Editorial Board. Those representatives will be asked to serve a four-month term beginning in March.
The Editorial Board includes two community representatives and three members of the newspaper staff. Newspaper staff members on the board are Publisher Suzanne Schlicht, Editor Lisa Schlichtman and veteran reporter Tom Ross. The Editorial Board formulates the Our View opinions expressed on the ViewPoints page of the newspaper. The Editorial Board meets at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays.

The 9th annual Moonshine Ski & Dine event is March 6
The ninth annual Moonshine Ski & Dine fundraising event for Rocky Mountain Youth Corps will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. March 6 at Catamount Lake House. Those who attend will have the chance to cross country ski or snowshoe under the moon’s glow and enjoy drinks, appetizers, chili and desserts. A silent auction will be held in conjunction with the event along with prize drawings and a Ski Trail Treasure Hunt. Tickets are $50. Small business seminar to be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 25
A Success Steps Seminar on selling or buying a small business will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Colorado Mountain College Entrepreneurship Center in Steamboat Springs. The program is presented by Randy Rudasics, manager of the Yampa Valley Entrepreneurship, and Steve Hitchcock, owner of Zirkel Trading Company and Soda Creek Pizza. The cost of the seminar is $15. CDC: US has high number of reported measles cases
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States is experiencing a high number of reported measles cases, many of which were acquired during international travel.
A total of 129 measles cases have been reported in the U.S. in 2014, the highest number reported since 1996.
Of these cases, 34 were imported from other countries, such as the Philippines.
The Philippines has been experiencing an explosive outbreak of measles, with approximately 20,000 confirmed or suspected cases reported during January and February, including 69 deaths.
Measles is a highly contagious, acute viral illness that is transmitted by contact with an infected person through coughing and sneezing. After an infected person leaves a location, the virus remains contagious for as many as two hours on surfaces and in the air. Measles can cause severe health complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis, and death.
CDC recommends international travelers, school age children and college students receive two MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccinations. Children between ages 1 and 3 years old should receive one dose of MMR, and two doses if they are traveling internationally.

Parents of 5th-graders are invited to committee meeting
Parents of fifth-graders are invited to attend Steamboat Springs Middle School Parent Information Committee meetings in the middle school conference room. The meetings are held monthly to give middle school parents an opportunity to learn more about activities at the middle school and the district. The group also works to raise money for middle school faculty members and programs.

Nonprofit Optimist Club is in need of more members
The nonprofit Steamboat Springs Optimist Club is in need of members. In addition to the Pumpkin festival, the club puts on the annual Fishing Derby and Pancake Breakfast; the annual Bike Rodeo, during which Steamboat Springs Police Department officers teach children about bike safety; and the Literacy Bug reading program for Steamboat fifth-graders. The group also runs the Teen of the Month club — which recognizes area high school students for their contributions to school, church and the community — and awards a $1,500 Teen of the Year scholarship.

Military, family can receive in-district tuition at CMC
Active-duty military, veterans, as well as their spouses and dependents, can receive in-district tuition at Colorado Mountain College no matter where they live, according to a news release.
With in-district tuition rates of $56 to $95 per credit hour, CMC has been named the nation’s third-most-affordable public college offering bachelor’s degrees, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

The Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus, more
The Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). Tetanus is a serious disease caused by a toxin (poison) made by bacteria that’s commonly found in soil. Tetanus does not spread from person to person. The bacteria enter the body through breaks in the skin — usually cuts or puncture wounds.
Tetanus vaccination is recommended for everyone and should be repeated every 10 years. Immunizations including Tdap and other routine recommended vaccinations are covered by insurance.
