Ace, the 'cool' place

It may have been scorching hot in Las Vegas last week, but employees of the local Ace Hardware store in Steamboat Springs who traveled to Sin City were feeling pretty "cool."

That's because store representatives were in Vegas to grab Ace's coveted Coolest Hardware Store Award.

The award only is given to six of Ace's 4,850 locally-owned and operated stores worldwide.

"To borrow the words from Coolest Hardware Store, it's just really cool to be picked by Ace as one of the coolest hardware stores on the planet," owner Scott Schlapkohl said in a news release announcing the award.

The local Ace store is owned by Schlapkohl and Danny Swanson.

Local restaurants earn national recognition for wine lists

Restaurants in Steamboat Springs were well represented on a newly published list of places in the country with the best wine lists.

Five Steamboat Springs eateries were featured in Wine Spectator's 2014 Restaurant Awards.

The honorees include Mambo Italiano, Mahogany Brewery and Grill, bistro c.v., Carl's Tavern and Harwig's/L'Apogee.

The Home Ranch in Clark also made the list.

The six Routt County wine destinations were among the more than 80 mentioned in the state of Colorado.

Wine Spectator started recognizing the best wine lists in the country in 1981.

The award winners will be listed in an Aug. 31 issue of the magazine.
