In this special SteadyGo weekly roundup, we have a look at what the SteadyGo staff did during the bank holiday weekend.

Mud

On Sunday I went to Leeds Fest for the day.

The title of this post could lead you to believe that it rained all day – It didn’t. In fact, the weather was fairly good, I don’t think it rained at all.

Unfortunately it had rained the day before. A lot.

For some reason I decided against wearing wellies (I don’t actually have any), but to be fair I don’t think it would have made a difference. We were ankle deep (sometimes knee deep) in mud from the moment we got there till the moment we left. I somehow ended up with a fair amount of mud on my upper body as well, even though I never actually fell over (I think).

In spite of the mud it was still a really good day. Or maybe that was because of the mud, it did feel like everyone was in it together. I didn’t even see that many bands I like in the end, but the atmosphere was brilliant so it just didn’t matter.

My highlights were Brian Fallon heading the Festival Republic stage, and the flares during The Courteeners set (I think it was The Courteeners anyway, I may have had a drink by then).

Wipe out

Bank Holiday Wipe Out, a condition usually suffered by my better half, came upon me on Friday afternoon. Three days of lounging, coughing and wheezing interspersed with some reminders of the intricacies of Umbraco. I used some downtime to get back up to speed on the use of Surface Controllers in Umbraco to effect pretty much all the more complex operations required on a site. Next week’s post will be a top level view of the structure of the use of these controllers on site.

Alex’s Bank Holiday Tips

While I’ve always looked forward to holidays of any kind, like most people, I’ve often found it strange the government deemed it necessary to give us particular days off throughout the year and specifically instructed us what we had to do with them.

If you’ve often struggled to find something to do on your Bank Holiday, here are a few ideas to get you started:

Visit Jodrell Bank Observatory

This I think is a kind of giant bowl for catching all the stuff aliens throw at us. Most of the things are just alien rubbish like KitKat wrappers and cigarette butts, sometimes however something really interesting is hurled in our direction.

In April 2006 a papier mache model of Thunderbird’s Tracy Island was caught hurtling at Earth at close to the speed of light. Scientist believe this was an attempt by extra-terrestrial intelligence’s vastly superior to our own to earn a coveted Blue Peter Badge.

Go poke Matt LeBanc with a stick.

Former friends actor, star of the Lost in Space movie and recent Top Gear presenter, Matt has turned his back on the world of showbiz after discovering an affinity for the riverbanks of Hull. Matt changed his name to better reflect his new found passion and can often be seen rolling around on the banks of the river Humber in his pants, chugging from a can of special brew.

Come see us at Sunny Bank Mills

We wont be here.

And what did I do this bank holiday? I’d been meaning to catch up on my finances for some months, so I decided to go to the bank to cash some cheques. It was closed.

Hot tubs

This bank holiday I spent my time near Blencathra in the Lake District and stayed in a luxury style lodge. The weekend consisted of doing a lot of walking in Keswick and Ullswater seeing all the sites in the daytime and then drinking copious amounts of alcohol and enjoying the hot tub at night.

Carnival

Despite living in Leeds for most of my life I’ve never been to the West Indian Carnival before. This bank holiday however, things were different! After heading up to Harehills with some mates I was blown away, the festival is the longest running West Indian carnival in Europe and I can see why. Hundreds of parade dancers, thousands of revelers, cheap red stripe and a crap load of jerk chicken makes for my kind of bank holiday Monday. If you’ve never been I can’t recommend it enough. I’ll see you there next year!

@anonymas_carnival #masband @lacoolg has a smile that says “We took #BIGGEST and #Best Band titles at #Leeds #Carnival #2016 ” She’s right! #feathers #costume #bling #costume #masquerade #colours #sparkle #gems #design

The three peaks challenge

Last Saturday I completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in under 12 hours. I can honestly say it is one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life – yes that may sound dramatic but it truly was. My limping has only just stopped.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Three Peaks Challenge, it basically is a 24 mile walk and includes 5,200 ft of ascent up Three Peaks, Ingleborough, Pen-y-ghent and Whernside in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park. In total I walked 68,231 steps and over 25 miles by the end of the day.

It was a tough day and I did very little ‘training’, which in hindsight I wish I had done a little more practicing (putting one leg in front of the other gets pretty difficult after a while). Having said that the excitement that you feel when you reach the finish line is well worth the struggle. Even if I do say so myself, I’m really proud and feel as though I have achieved something worthwhile and put the bank holiday to good use.

Here’s a few pictures from the day and you can see what I mean by the spectacular scenery.

Family Time

My bank holiday this weekend was family time. This meant no sitting out in the Yorkshire sun but rather trips to Ikea and being the host with the most. So my weekend was made up of little victories, one of which was that I managed to find some time in the madness to listen to the new Metallica track (which was 3 minutes and 18 seconds of quality me time). A seemingly small achievement in the 3 days, but their new track is a relentless 3 minute throwback to the bands 80’s trash days, and that’s what I like in my music. So it provided the best possible soundtrack for my bank holiday.

BBQ in the rain

In true British fashion, nothing stops the good times on a bank holiday weekend even if that includes torrential rain. The other half and I made sure we were prepared by buying a gazebo. It was still a warm day so it would have been a shame for everyone to pile into the house too early, even though it was a housewarming. The gazebo turned out to be only partially waterproof, making a sort of fine mist, like standing next to a waterfall. This was remedied by finding an old fully waterproof gazebo under the house(which is apparently haunted according to certain SteadyGo guests) and using the roof of that on top of the new gazebo. Problem solved.

The rest of that day and night is a blur of partially formed images and scenes. I probably had a pretty good time. The rest of the weekend however was unfortunately ruined by the resulting epic hangover. Pretty standard.

Leeds fest

This weekend was possibly one of the best this year for me, and probably the muddiest one too. If you’ve been keeping up with some of our recent blog posts you’ll know that me and fellow cult member Sam made our descent to Leeds Festival.

Upon arrival into the car park I instantly knew it was going to be a messy day. I hadn’t even walked two feet and my trainers were already indistinguishable from the ground below me. Trust me to wear trainers to a festival where it’s been raining all weekend! – That is one of my regrets for the weekend, but it was only a minor issue.

The day actually turned out to be quite sunny despite the previous rain. Some of the highlights of the day for me was obviously seeing The Red Hot Chilli Peppers who were absolutely amazing! If you missed out then I would highly recommend seeing them at their upcoming tour. I also saw My Nu Leng, Netski, and few more banging DJs, however my memory is abit fuzzy! Me and Sam eventually met up and finished the night off by going to see his favorite artist Brian Fallon, what a great day! Now onto the next festival! (in a week).
