In a previous post I mentioned that one of my favorite things about being from a small town in NH is the history and traditions that are passed down from generation to generation. One of my favorite things to tell people about when I am trying to explain to someone the size of the town I am from is the fact that the first job I had when I was in high school was also the same job my mom had when she was in high school. We both worked at Polly’s Pancake Parlor.
The history of Polly’s is a book in itself. Recently the original building was taken down and rebuilt. The new building is beautiful and is a little bit more modern in some ways, but since they used as many pieces of the old building in the new one as they could, there is no question when you walk in that you are in Polly’s Pancake Parlor! The same delicious smells fill the air in and outside the building, they still serve the same delicious pancakes and menu as before and, of course, it is still owned and operated by the same talented and fantastic family!

This all fits in with the quaint, small town feel and history that I love so much. Shortly after I started working there, I was visiting my grandparents and was telling them about my job and how much I enjoyed it. My grandparents own a furniture business in Lisbon, my grandmother worked in the high school kitchen for a long time and my grandfather used to drive a school bus, so it would make sense that everyone in town knows my grandparents for one reason or another.

Back to the point…. We were talking about my new job and they mentioned that they had heard that I was doing a really good job. I worked with a couple of friends from school there, but I didn’t think that any of them would have said anything to my grandparents about it so I asked who had mentioned it to them. They said that the owners had been down and said that I was doing a great job! Of course this made me very happy since I really liked the job, but it also made me really appreciate the size of the area I lived in.

There were always people that were quick to point out the cons of living in such a small place, but to me, this was a giant pro! As someone who wants to do a good job at whatever job I do, it’s nice to know that when I am successful, word will get around, and there is nothing nicer than having word get back to your family and knowing that you have made them proud as well.

If you have never been to Polly’s Pancake Parlor, put it on your list! There is a variety of items on the menu, it’s not just pancakes (but the pancakes are amazing), and it is all made right there! I started out as a bus person and worked my way up to cook’s helper! I used to make the pancake batters too! I was amazed at how much they do themselves! What’s more, is that when you are done with your meal, you can bring most of the products you need to recreate the meal home from their gift shop! You can even order it online and have it mailed to you! If you don’t live close, hop online and order yourself some of their maple spread, you will thank me later!
A great place with a great history and I am so proud that it is a part of my family history as a place of employment that my mother and I shared at the same point in our lives, to a place that my family still goes from time to time as a special treat when someone comes home for a visit from out of state or any number of other reasons we can find. Now that they are in a bigger and better building and don’t have to close for the winter, I am sure we will find many more opportunities to visit and I can’t wait!
