Whether it be on an Ipod, Iphone, Android, Tablet or Ipad, there are a huge number of apps (applications) available to download to keep your kids busy for hours; perfect for that long road trip or on the school holiday afternoon when everyone just needs a little quiet time. SAHM has gathered together a list of the most popular apps, both free and paid, as voted by the best educated of all on this subject, our kids!

EDUCATIONAL

Reading Eggs – free. A range of ebooks and reading resources to help your child learn to read.

Playschool – free. Promotes imagination and creativity through open-ended play.

ABCIview – free. Watch ABC4Kids shows on any tablet device.

ABC Fireworks – $1.99. A fun way to learn the alphabet by touching letters, watching them turn into fireworks and hearing the letter name. Suitable for kids aged 1-5.

Human Body Puzzles for Kids – free. A jigsaw puzzle and memory game for children to introduce them to the parts of the body.

Lalaloopsy Games and Puzzles – $0.99. Fun 3d puzzles and games with levels from Easy, Medium and Hard difficulty.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Apps – $2.99. Includes Paint & Play and Wildlife Count Along

Toca Boca Apps – free to $2.99. These modern day cut out dolls allow kids to design clothes, style hair, create costumes, accessories etc

Eggy Words – free. Helps children learn and recognise sight words

Ninja Chicken – free. Helps children learn about and recognise prime numbers

Mister Maker – $2.99. Kids can get creative and experiment with hundreds of different arts and crafts.

Bubble Wiitch Saga – free. An enchanting and addictive puzzle adventure.

Bad Piggies – free to $2.99. From the creators of Angry Birds, this app is form the pigs point of view.

Plants Vs Zombies - free. Meet, greet and defeat clusters of zombies from damaging your brain.

Bejeweled – free. Match 3 or more jewels and create more puzzles with Flame gems, Star gems and Hypercubes.

Candy Crush Saga – free but some in-game extra moves and levels require payment. Switch and match pieces of candy to move through the levels.

Face Paint – free. Face painting with various colours and patterns

Cooking Dash – free. Cook up culinary chaos in a virtual kitchen.

Zombie Smasher – $0.99. Defend your home and town from zombies

High School Story – free. Popular amongst the pre-teen girls, this app lets you create a school of your dreams. Throw parties, go on dates or star in a fashion show.

Minecraft - MASSIVELY POPULAR amongst older kids, Minecraft is about placing blocks to build things and going on adventures. Pocket edition is free but extended editions require payment.

Hay Day – free. Suitable for more advanced users, build your own farm with Hay Day.

Movie Quiz – free. Actually a lot of fun for older kids and parents alike. Guess all kinds of movies from hints and clues

Clash of Clans – free. An epic combat strategy game, popular amongst older boys.

 

Never underestimate the power of YouTube. So many kids told us how much they love watching highlights of their favourite shows on this forum.

In true SAHM style, we’ve tried to stick to the freebies and cheaper apps out there, and we are sure there are heaps more to entertain your kids when Mum needs a bit of a break! Or make it a family affair and join in.
