>> SCHOOL CLOSURES
Hawaii island: All public schools closed Wednesday and Thursday. All inter-scholastic athletic events and student activities canceled Wednesday and Thursday.
Charter schools closed Wednesday and Thursday: Connections Public Charter School in Hilo, Hawaii Technology Academy (closing learning centers but classes will be online), Innovations Public Charter School in Kailua-Kona, Kanu o ka ‘Āina New Century Public Charter School in Waimea, Kaʻu Learning Academy in Naalehu, Ke Kula ʻo Nāwahiokalani’ōpu’u Iki, LPCS, Kua o ka Lā New Century Public Charter School in Pahoa, Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School in Laupahoehoe, Na Wai Ola Public Charter School in Mountain View, Waimea Middle Public Conversion Charter School in Waimea, West Hawaii Explorations Academy in Kailua-Kona, Kona Pacific Public Charter School in Kailua in Kealakekua. The following charter schools will close Wednesday, and may close Thursday depending on conditions: Hawaii Academy of Arts & Science Public Charter School in Pahoa, Ka ‘Umeke Kā’eo in Keaukaha, Hilo, Ke Ana La’ahana Public Charter School in Keaukaha, Hilo, Volcano School of Arts & Sciences in Volcano.
Kamehameha Schools’ Hawaii island operations, including Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi campus at Keaau, KS preschools islandwide, community programs and all business offices closed Wednesday.
All University of Hawaii campuses on the Big Island closed Wednesday, including UH Hilo, Hawaii Community College, HCC-Palamanui, ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center, North Hawaii Education and Research Center, Hale Pohaku — Onizuka Center for International Astronomy and food and lodging facilities, UH Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources facilities on Hawaii island and all UH Manoa Institute for Astronomy facilities on Hawaii island.
>> LIBRARIES:
Hawaii island: Public libraries closed Wednesday and Thursday.
Maui County: All public libraries’ programs cancelled Wednesday and Thursday.
PORTS:
Hawaii island: Hilo Harbor, Kawaihae Harbor closed as of 8 p.m. Tuesday
>> GOVERNMENT
Hawaii island: State Courthouses and Judiciary Offices closed Wednesday. All documents due during the court closure date will be considered timely if filed by the close of business Thursday. Hearings or trials scheduled for Wednesday will be rescheduled to the next available date.
State and county offices on the Big Island will be closed Wednesday. State employees will be granted administrative leave and should not report to work on Wednesday, with the exceptions of: departmental disaster/emergency coordinators, disaster response workers, employees whose work involves continuing crucial operations/services, such as hospital workers, correctional workers, etc. Employees in the exception categories must report to work unless department directors excuse them.
The Hele-On bus service and county landfills and solid waste transfer stations will also be closed.
>> PARKS
Hawaii island: Division of Forestry and Wildlife closed all forest reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, natural area reserves, Na Ala Hele hiking trails, forest campgrounds and game management areas, including Keanakolu cabins, Ainapo hiking trail, Muliwai trail and Waimanu valley campground until further notice. Camping permits for this weekend are cancelled until further notice.
Division of State Parks closed its park campgrounds, pavilions and cabins starting tonight. All Big Island parks will remain closed Wednesday and until conditions warrant re-opening. The use of state park cabins and pavilions will be restricted Wednesday, until further notice.
The division closed all Big Island park campgrounds, pavilions, cabins along with Lava Tree State Monument, Mackenzie State Recreation Area and Manuka State Wayside Wednesday. All other Big Island State Parks will remain open until end of the day Wednesday and then will not re-open until conditions are safe.
All county parks and facilities, including the lava viewing area will be closed.
The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has closed campgrounds and will close the Chain of Craters Road and lava viewing areas Wednesday morning. The Jaggar Museum, Kilauea Visitors Center and the entrance to the park will close at a yet-to-be-determined time on Wednesday. Guests staying at the Kilauea Military Camp and Volcano House may shelter in place, unless directed by staff to an emergency shelter.
Maui County: Division of Forestry and Wildlife will close by noon Wednesday all of its managed lands, including forest reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, natural area reserves, Na Ala Hele hiking trails, game management areas.
Division of State Parks’ Polipoli State Park will be closed, but all other Maui state parks will remain open on Wednesday.
>> BUSINESSES
Bank of Hawaii’s Big Island branches closed Wednesday.
Hawaii Eletric Light offices closed Wednesday. Customers can still call the trouble desk at (808) 969-6666.
Hawaiian Airlines’ customers holding tickets for travel to, from or via the Big Island between Wednesday and Thursday will be permitted a one-time reservation change with waiver of change fee provided that: ticket was issued on or before Tuesday, affected flights were originally scheduled for travel between Wednesday and Thursday. Change must be ticketed for new flights or before Monday.
Island Air will waive reservation change fees and differences in fares for customers needing to change their travel plans due to Hurricanes Madeline and Lester. Customers ticketed for travel from Wednesday through Saturday will be permitted to change their reservations without charge for ticketed flights through Sept. 10. Changes must be made prior to the original departure date and ticketed on or before Saturday.
