There was a blueprint to handle run-and-gun Punahou, a Buffanblu-print, really.
The ‘Iolani Raiders followed the plan perfectly, getting 22 points and eight rebounds from center Hugh Hogland for a 49-38 win over the visiting Buffanblu on Wednesday night.
No. 3-ranked ‘Iolani neutralized No. 2 Punahou’s normally dynamic fullcourt press, and Hogland was razor sharp on his inside-out passes against double teams in the low post. The 6-foot-9 senior, who said he will play at UC Santa Barbara next season, tallied four assists and two blocks, shooting 11-for-14 from the field in a highly efficient performance.
His younger brother, Cole, was superb with 13 points, six boards and two dimes as the Raiders broke open a game that was 19-all at the half.
“I’m extremely proud of him,” the older Hogland said. “He finally showed up to play in an ‘Iolani uniform.”
“This was Cole’s best game,” coach Dean Shimamoto added.
The win gave ‘Iolani (1-0) a jump start in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball race.
“It was an enjoyable game because it was a grind,” Shimamoto said. “We know all their guys can all play. We tried to pick our poisons, tried to take away some of the things they like to do.”
They had just returned from a tournament in San Diego that sharpened their edge.
“We won our first game, and lost our next three games. Two of them would be a contender to win ILH and state. We learned about how we start games, how we follow a game plan,” Shimamoto said of the seven-day trip. “We spent so much time together, it helped us understand each other better.”
Punahou, coming off a title at its Punahou Invitational, is 0-1 in league play. Sophomore center Duke Clemens had team highs of 13 points and six boards, but no other Buffanblu scored more than nine points.
“We didn’t play with our normal flow,” Punahou coach Darren Matsuda said. “ ‘Iolani did a good job with tempo. I told the team if we’re in the 40s or under, that’s ‘Iolani’s game. If it’s in the 60s, that’s our best chance to win. Usually, someone scores 45, we beat them.”
Hogland’s defensive wingspan in the paint was a major factor. Punahou looked a bit gun-shy as ‘Iolani’s Helam Baldomero shadowed sharpshooter Chris Kobayashi.
“They stayed on Chris, but we’ve been able to find other ways to score before,” Matsuda said. “ ‘Iolani played awesome defense.”
Kobayashi finished with four points on 2-for-8 shooting from the field. As a team, Punahou took just 42 shots from the field, making 15 (36 percent), including 1-for-7 from the arc. The slowdown pace turned it into more of a chess match featuring rugged man defense more than any kind of offensive fireworks.
The Raiders shot 61 percent from the field (22-for-36), including 3-for-8 from the arc.
The lead changed hands three times in the first half. A steal by Cole Hogland led to a layup by Hugh Hogland to tie the game at 19 before the half. Baldomero drained a wing 3 on a dish from Hugh Hogland to give the home team a 22-21 lead, and the Raiders never trailed again.
“Helam balled out tonight,” Hugh Hogland said.
Moments later, Baldomero pushed hard on the fastbreak and scooped a lob to Hugh Hogland, whose slam dunk triggered a mini-run.
Cole Hogland posted up for a layup, and scored again on a cut to the rim, getting feeds from Hugh both times. The latter bucket plus a free throw opened the lead to 29-25, and after Hugh Hogland scored on a lob from Noah Bumanglag, the lead was six points.
Punahou stayed close on buckets by Maninoa Tufono. After Clemens scored at the rim on a drive and dish by Tufono, Punahou was within 34-31 early in the fourth. The Buffanblu threw their halfcourt traps at ‘Iolani again, but the Raiders were ready.
“We’ve been working 5-on-8 (press breakers) just like we did getting ready for Findlay Prep,” Hugh Hogland said. “We treated Punahou like we were facing Findlay.”
