The Home Milk Delivery Tradition

Today, when you want a glass of milk you will most likely go to your local super market to buy it. However, your grandparents probably remember a different time, a time when fresh milk was delivered to their door from the local milkman.

The emergence of large grocery stores has made buying milk more convenient and affordable for customers. But at what cost?

Consumers are now buying mass produced milk that contains many dangerous preservatives that can harm their health. Not to mention that they are often stored in plastic bags or jugs, that not only affects the taste of the milk, but is also harmful to the environment.

The decline of the milkman has been rapid since the 1960’s. According to statistics from the USDA, in 1950 over half of the milk consumed in the USA was delivered straight to peoples homes. A similar study in 2005 revealed that only .4 percent of milk consumed in the USA was delivered to peoples homes.

Fresh Milk, Home Delivered

Crescent Ridge Dairy has kept the tradition of delivering fresh dairy products to customers alive. They believe that customers will prefer their products over supermarket products because they come from a trusted source.

In its 82-year history, Crescent Ridge has never stopped delivering fresh milk to its customers. They have about 3000 customers from 80 communities inside interstate 495.

One of their longest lasting milkman is Luis Montero.

Luis Montero has been the local milkman with Crescent Ridge Dairy for over 25 years. He has fond memories of a time when it was common practice for fresh milk to be delivered straight to people’s home, by a friendly local milkman, and he enjoys playing a role in keeping the tradition alive.

Montero remains passionate about his job because of the tranquility of working early in the morning and the relationships that he has forged with customers. He wakes up every morning at 3 a.m. to load his refrigerated truck.  He then embarks on his 103-stop route, providing customers with fresh products ranging from breads, meats and seafood to dairy beverages.

Montero has developed such a strong relationship with Crescent Ridge customers that he knows most of them by name and even remembers most of their orders. Many customers simply write ‘milk’ on their order and Montero will know whether they want 1 percent, 2 percent or skim milk. If he doesn’t know he gives them their previous order.

Where Does Your Milk Come From?

These days, many people want to know the source of their dairy products and their has been the local milkman. This has lead to a growing trend in people buying locally produced products, in their own communities.

Now that more and more people are buying local food, there has been an increase in food delivery services, including the milkman. According to National Public Radio, the milkman is making a comeback!

A major reason for this resurgence of the milkman is that people love drinking milk out of glass milk bottles. Glass bottles offer many benefits over plastic bags, cartons and jugs.

Not only does the milk tastes colder and better in glass bottles, but they are also less wasteful and harmful to our natural environment, because… glass milk bottles are reusable!

People simply need to leave their used bottles on their front door step and the milkman will pick them up during his next round. The bottles will then be reused, leaving no unneeded waste behind.

This combined with other benefits of locally produced products, such as supporting local economy and preventing the risk of large scale contamination, make the need for the milkman and daily milk delivery a no-brainer.
