The Scoop on Kilby Cream

Bill and Phyllis Kilby own a local dairy farm in Colora, Maryland. Bill’s family has been farming in Maryland since 1961, but has been in the farming business for 100 years.

Bill’s family owned and operated farms in Cecil County, Maryland, before Bill and Phyllis opened the creamery in Colora.

Now, they package and process milk and ice cream in their facility, and sell both their products on the farm and through home milk delivery.

Their daughter, Megan Coleman, also helps out running the farm and promoting their media initiatives. Together, the family continues to support local causes and keep customers happy.

Kilby Cream now employs about 40 dedicated employees who work hard to hand make and oversee all of the steps of production.

The Kilby Cream Dairy Farm has 400 cows in their herd. Each cow is fed a healthy diet without any preservatives.

Colora’s small-town, rural environment allows the cows to openly graze without distractions, and gives them space in the winter to feed. It’s the perfect place for children and adults to enjoy the benefits of rural life while snacking on a frozen treat.

From Local Milk Delivery to Homemade Ice Cream

Kilby Cream’s loyal customers claim that their milk tastes better than big brands. That’s because the Kilbys pride themselves on producing the freshest milk at the highest quality, without additives, and delivering it within days of its production.

Local milk delivery is a big part of what makes the Kilbys so successful. They deliver milk to about 900 families.

The delivery drivers also take eggs, cheese, and other grocery items from local suppliers to their customers.

Ice cream is a big seller for the family, too. They’ve been churning their own homemade ice cream flavors since 2005 and selling it at another farm they own.

In 2010, the Kilbys moved the ice cream shop to the Colora farm. Since then, it’s been busy keeping customers satisfied with 50 regular ice cream flavors and 18 seasonal ones. The shop also sells snacks such as sandwiches and wraps.

Helping Maryland’s Consumers Get Connected

The Kilby family frequently participates in Maryland tourism initiatives and organizations aimed at helping consumers understand where their food comes from.

Bill and Phyllis are both members of the Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative. This organization is a milk marketing initiative that’s co-owned by almost 1,000 dairy farmers in the Eastern United States.

They are open to consumers and love educating them about how they raise their cows, the process they use to create their dairy products, and how they take care of their land.

In fact, the farm frequently gets visits from local schools where eager students get to see the cows up close. They get to tour the greenhouse and see the inside of the processing plant, where all the ice cream magic happens.

The Kilbys also educate the children about the importance of caring for the land and herd, and how rural life really works.

And they don’t just do that for schools. The family frequently participates in Maryland agro-tourism events and workshops to help familiarize the public with rural farming.

Conservation is very important to the family. They’ve put their land into a conservation trust to make sure that the land will stay open for future generations.

They’ve even begun to lease some of their property to a micro-brewery!

This small business sure has a huge heart.
