Port Vale legend Neil Aspin has been linked with a return to the club, replacing Micky Adams at the helm at the end of the season.

The former Leeds United and Valiants defender has impressed since taking charge of FC Halifax, leading them to three promotions and steering them to just three points off the play-off positions in the Skrill Premier this season.

Port Vale chairman Norman Smurthwaite is believed to be interested in bringing in the 48 year old as Adams is not expected to renew his contract at the end of this season.

Adams, 52, who has spent four-and-a-half years over two spells at the Burslem based club, is believed to have discussed the possibility of a new contract but there has been no movement.

Aspin made 348 appearances for Port Vale spanning  a 10-year period.

He played an integral role in the victorious Football League Trophy campaign of 1992-1993, when Vale defeated Stockport County 2-1 at Wembley, as well as leading the side to promotion to the first division at the end of the 1993-1994 season.

Aspin also played the full 90 minutes of the 1996 Anglo Italian Cup Final with the Valiants ultimately going down 5-2 against Genoa.

As well as being voted Player of the Year twice during his long-standing affiliation with the club, he was also selected in the 1993-1994 divisional ‘Team of the Season’ nominated by members of the Professional Football Association (PFA).

Aspin left the Valiants in 1999 and was given the perfect send off, enjoying a testimonial that featured Port Vales most recognisable fan, Robbie Williams.
