Promotions Director, The Committee To Commemorate Martin Luther King
The Committee to Commemorate Martin Luther King announced their continued effort to promote diversity, acceptance, and awareness through the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through local displays of the Warsaw Community School student artwork for Black History Month.
The committee collaborated with art teachers in the local school district to work with students to use Dr. King, his speeches, and his ideology to inspire their artwork.
A total of 62 pieces of student art will be displayed at several locations throughout Warsaw and Winona Lake during the month of February. The displays can be found at the Warsaw Community Public Library in both the upstairs and downstairs display cases, Mount Memorial Hall on Grace College Campus, Warsaw Community High School and the Latte Lounge.
“We are excited to expand our committee’s work into other opportunities available in our community,” stated Brian Lowe III, the president of the CCMLK. “We are looking to identify other avenues to celebrate and promote diversity acceptance in addition to our annual event. Honoring Dr. King throughout Black History month, while engaging students in the project, is an excellent way for us to continue this year’s event them of ‘Inspire through Education’ and remember the sacrifices made to get us where we are today.”
Black History month was first recognized by the U.S. Government in 1976. The month of February serves as a period of remembrance to honor influential African-Americans throughout history and encourage the continued practice of human equality and civil rights in our country.
