On 20th July 2012, SST hosted its 2nd EduCamp@SST, a mini-conference where educators and others such as industry partners or students come and share projects and ideas that they are passionate about in an informal setting. The concept was adapted from EduCamps and the key idea was to learn from each other’s experiences
Participants were encouraged to create or utilise a Google+ account and join the event within Google+. This encourages interaction where participants could either make comments from their learning devices as the event progresses, or even post questions that could be addressed on the spot.
There were no pre-determined topics as they were determined from the participants’ interests and were decided via the votes at the event. The topics were covered in 3 separate classrooms, giving participants the opportunity to either remain in one particular venue or alternate between venues to attend sessions of their preference.
The topics include:
Venue 1
Centre for e-learning’s free educational apps by Ashley Tan
Math notation by Murray Bourne
Augmented Reality in Education by Kat Yong Jie, Darren Teo, Kaelan Mikowicz
Venue 2
The recondite effectiveness of technology in education by Gigabit Studios
The use of NetLogo in Education by Balasubramaniam Praveen and Farrel Nah
Tech and mother tongue by Hardy Shein, Gavin Lim and Choi Min Suk
Venue 3
The rise of online by justapp
Digital Privacy by Hong KaiXuan
Photography and the Modern Social Media by Jurvis Tan
After each speaker had made their presentation, participants were encouraged to either ask questions or discuss about the topics covered. These encouraged the cross-pollination of ideas that led to intense debates on topics such as the moral and financial implications of copyright and of online privacy that weren’t originally on the topic agenda.
The students, who were from SST’s ICT/TDP programme, were commended for their great facilitation and coverage of interesting topics and participants left with a greater insight on the topics discussed.
