This year's Festival de Cannes is full-steam ahead, and the red carpet was brimming with stars like Carey Mulligan, Nicole Kidman, and Isla Fisher wearing some glamorous, dramatic gowns. The fashion is fun, sure, but the real reason people from all over the globe gather in the South of France each May is... movies.

Cannes kicked off with a flurry of announcements.

Image Entertainment acquired the rights to the Winnie Mandela biopic, starring Jennifer Hudson and directed by Darrell J. Roodt, with Terrence Howard co-starring as Nelson Mandela. The company also nabbed Last Love, the Sandra Nettelbeck romantic drama starring Michael Caine.

The Weinstein Company is in negotiations for the film Philomena, the Stephen Frears directed movie that stars Judi Dench and Steve Coogan.

REVIEWS
Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby got a so-so reaction at the festival, even though it is seeing better-than-expected box office in the U.S.

Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring got a mixed reaction from Todd McCarthy at The Hollywood Reporter, while Scott Foundas at Variety called it "a spiritual sequel of sorts to The Social Network."
