If you’re one of SPY’S Broadway babies and always craving more news of the Great White Way, the latest news bite is the 2001 Oscar-nominated romance Amelie, which starred Audrey Tautou, is on its way to Broadway.

Dan Messe will write the score for a new musical adaptation of Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Oscar-nominated movie.

“So not the best kept secret,” Messe posted on Facebook, “But still I’m happy to announce that I’ve been commissioned to adapt the film Amelie for Broadway.

The creative team includes Craig Lucas (book) and Nathan Tysen (co-lyrics). Can’t wait to share it with you!”

Amelie tells the story of a ray of sunshine Amelie Poulain, a young girl who was home-schooled by her mother and cultivated a very active imagination.

The film details her life in Paris as she helps those around her try to find love, and ultimately falls in love herself. (Tear)

The movie was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film. Amelie (film) stars Audrey Tatou, Mathieu Kassovitz, Rufus and Lorella Cravotta.

The film box office numbers were impressive. It sold 8.6m tickets in France alone and earned $152m worldwide including DVD sales and Cable.

“I wrote that imagining that scene where Amelie and Nino are speaking between the door,” he says, “So I’d already written a song for those characters, but then it took years and years to get the rights.”

Messe described composer Yann Tiersen’s original film music as “one of the best movie scores there is,” adding: “It’s one of the reasons why I love the film.”

But he said the musical would be recognizably different.

“I’m not interested in doing Parisian music. I don’t think I’m even going to use accordion in my score.

“The music sounds like mine. But certainly, I’m not playing up the Americana elements either. I’m not having pedal steel and fiddle, but it’ll be hyper-romantic and playful more than anything.”

Amelie won four Cesar Awards in France so it should prove a worthy addition to the next Broadway season must-sees. SPY HOLLYWOOD will keep you posted when it is time for casting calls.  Ciao
