Last night at the Nokia Theater was the Creative Arts Emmys. These awards honor the people who create the magic we all enjoy but the networks feel are to boring to see on prime time. It will be broadcasted on FXX  on September 21. See local listings. The Creative Arts Emmys are a precursor to the primetime Emmys which take place next weekend.

88 golden statues were given away. The Creative Arts Emmys producer Spike Jones Jr. appeared onstage before show time to urge winners to keep it short, announcing a 45-seconds limit from the moment the winner’s name is announced. “You have 45 seconds to get from your seat all the way down the aisle, up the steps, and do your acceptance speech. I’m not kidding. Forty-five seconds. We’ve found that you can say a lot in a very short period of time. Everybody in this room will thank you for it.

“There have been a lot of changes in TV over the 19 years that I’ve been privileged to produce these awards,” said Jones. “We’ve gone from Living Single to Walking Dead.”

“The Creative Arts Awards and Spike Jones, Jr. have become somewhat synonymous and we couldn’t be happier to have him back as the producer of this year’s awards,” said Alan Perris, Consultant to the Television Academy’s Chairman, Bruce Rosenblum.

Community’s Dan Harmon and Joel McHale set the nights tone as they presented the first four awards in a tongue biting cheek routine. In Hollywood you never bite the ass you will someday be kissing.

“Tonight we honor all of the people in prime-time television who are contractually obligated not to make eye contact with me,” said McHale. Harmon, the combative fired and then reinstated boss of Community, made a joke about how he’d soon be fired by FXX, the new network telecasting a truncated edition of the ceremony. “We’re going to show those frauds in TV that these people here tonight are the real celebrities,” he said.

Among its haul were awards for casting, art direction, hairstyling, sound mixing, cinematography and costumes.

The TV movie Behind the Candelabra made by US cable broadcaster HBO topped this years awards.

It stars Michael Douglas as the flamboyant pianist with Matt Damon playing the part of his secret partner.

Other winners included Melissa Leo for the sitcom Louie, Dan Bucatinsky for Scandal and Carrie Preston for The Good Wife.

Boardwalk Empire, picked up four awards, while NBC’s Saturday Night Live also won four.

CBS’s Undercover Boss won top reality program.

Netflix’s original drama House of Cards picked up two Emmys for casting and cinematography.

Behind the Candelabra will compete for seven more awards at the primetime Emmys on Sunday.

Other winners included South Park: Raising the Bar for best animated program.

One of the two major highlights of the long evening was Dan Bucatinsky when he won for his role on Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal, which is cast by Linda Lowy. He raced onstage in a frenzy, looking utterly shocked, and blurted, “Oh my God! Oh my God! Shonda Rhimes! Linda Lowy! You’ve changed my life!” He also thanked his team at CAA, his kids, his onscreen husband, Jeff Perry, and his real-life one, Don Roos. “How many people get to say onscreen husband and real-life husband?,” Bucatinsky marveled before giving a shoutout to the recent historic vote on gay marriage. “Thank you Supreme Court of the United States!”

Bob Newhart was honored for his guest role on The Big Bang Theory as Professor Proton, a former host of a children’s science show. The 84-year-old has been nominated six times before – his first nomination came in 1961 when his variety series, The Bob Newhart Show, earned a writing bid.

“This is my seventh shot at this… I just love this very much,” he told the audience, who gave him a standing ovation.

His character will return to the series: “Yes. I think we’re doing two more…. in October we’re doing the next one, and they just handed me a great script. I keep saying, ‘They kept giving me hanging curve balls and I keep swinging at them.’”

Tears of joy rolled down the cheeks as iconic Bob was cheered onstage by a standing ovation, an overcome Newhart warned Creative Arts producer Spike Jones he would not comply with the 45-second acceptance rule. “Spike, I’m gonna need a little more time with this,” he said. “This is my seventh shot at this.” Newhart then acknowledged his wife of 50 years, proving “there are long marriages in show business.” He also named his four children and mentioned how he worked for 14 years “at a wonderful place called MTM. And now I’m working at a wonderful place called Big Bang Theory.” He concluded by thanking the show’s cast “who really threw themselves on the sword for me.”
