(SPOT.ph) Breakups aren’t easy; in fact, even celebrities aren’t exempted from this kind of heartbreak. Funnily enough, we still manage to feel just as affected when it’s our favorite high-profile couples going their separate ways. If they can’t make it, where’s the hope for the rest of us? We round up 10 perfect ex-couples who broke our hearts with their conscious uncoupling.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
How they met: Sparks first flew between the two ridiculously good-looking co-stars in 2005’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith. At the time, Pitt was supposedly “on the rocks” with his then-wife, Jennifer Aniston. That union quickly dissolved and it wasn’t long until Brangelina captured the public’s collective hearts (despite the rather questionable relationship timeline).
How it ended: Twelve years, a quiet wedding in France, and six kids later, Hollywood’s biggest power couple shocked the world with news of their divorce. Jolie cited irreconcilable differences, while bringing Pitt’s parenting into question. As for those third party rumors, both Marian Cotillard and her long-time partner, Guillaume Canet, have shut those down.
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams
How they met: To this day, you still can't deny their onscreen chemistry. Gosling and McAdams reportedly didn't get along at first, but they began dating shortly after filming wrapped. Oh, and they also had that infamous Best Kiss moment at the MTV Movie Awards.
How it ended: Although their cinematic love story could still reduce any viewer to tears, fans were even more heartbroken when they parted in 2008. Still, you’ll be pleased to know that Gosling once told GQ Magazine that his romance with his former co-star was “a hell of lot more romantic” than the movie that brought them together. He also called her “one of the greatest loves of [his] life.” Swoon!
Rico Yan and Claudine Barretto
How they met: They were one of the biggest love teams in the '90s, starring in memorable projects like Mula Sa Puso, Dahil Mahal Na Mahal Kita, and Got 2 Believe. And as with many successful love teams, they took their romance off-screen, too.
How it ended: There was plenty of controversy surrounding their high-profile breakup. Many assumed it was over infidelity; some believed it was Raymart Santiago, whom Barretto started publicly dating shortly after, while others claimed it was Yan who was having the affair. There was also news of a physical altercation between the two prior to their split. Things only got worse when Yan passed away just weeks later.
Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens
How they met: Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens met while making beautiful, wholesome music in 2005's High School Musical. They ended up doing two more HSM movies together.
How it ended: Fans mourned when they called off their four-year romance in 2010, to surprisingly little drama. In 2015, Hudgens admitted that she ended up being very jealous about Efron getting a lot of attention from female fans. "Girls were running after him, and I was giving them death stares. Then I realized that's not what that's about," she told the New York Times.
Derek Ramsay and Angelica Panganiban
How they met: The two actors began dating in September 2006. Over the years, they worked on several projects together, including Ysabella in 2007, Maging Sino Ka Man: Ang Pagbabalik in 2007, and I Love You, Goodbye in 2009.
How it ended: Many expected wedding bells after six years of dating. Nobody saw the drama coming after it ended. In a series of fiery tweets, Panganiban implied that her ex had cheated on her repeatedly. In a later interview, she also accused Ramsay of being "controlling," and cited his relationship with his estranged wife, Mary Christine Jolly, as one of the reasons for their split. Jolly and Ramsay were married in 2002, but it was kept under wraps until 2014 when the former filed a concubinage complaint against him and Panganiban.
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman
How they met: The two were reportedly smitten with each other while on the set of the 1990 NASCAR drama, Days of Thunder. They were married for 11 years, with two adopted children and the 1996 Stanley Kubrick film, Eyes Wide Shut, under their belts.
How it ended: The end of their blissful marriage devastated Hollywood...and Kidman, who reportedly begged him to seek marriage counseling. Kidman later tied the knot with Keith Urban, while Cruise went on to infamously jump on Oprah's couch, marry Katie Holmes, then go through another divorce in 2012 (this time over his ties with Scientology).
Zanjoe Marudo and Bea Alonzo
How they met: Rumors of a romance began while they were working on the 2010 film, Sa 'Yo Lamang, but they didn't admit to dating until a year later. They were together for over five years.
How it ended: It all began when the jetsetting couple spent the holidays apart; Marudo in Europe and Alonzo in Japan. In January 2016, Marudo admitted their split in an emotional interview with Boy Abunda, but didn't divulge any details. Alonzo has since been linked to Paulo Avelino, her perennial leading man, John Lloyd Cruz, and more recently, her former boyfriend Gerald Anderson.
Ryan Philippe and Reese Witherspoon
How they met: Contrary to popular belief, Ryan Philippe and Reese Witherspoon were already dating way before they starred in 1998's Cruel Intentions. They tied the knot shortly after the film premiered.
How it ended: Fans of their sizzling chemistry were disappointed when they parted ways in 2007. Despite rumors of an affair (which Philippe had denied), their divorce was pretty amicable—especially by Hollywood's standards. They remain friends to this day and have two kids.
Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa
How they met: Whether it was films like Forevermore and Ngayong Nandito Ka or shows like Pangako Sa 'Yo and Sana'y Walang Wakas, EchoTin had everyone swooning. It was only natural that they took their onscreen love off screen, too.
How it ended: It turns out Rosales and Hermosa weren't as star-crossed as Angelo and Yna. Ultimately, it was their youth and the pressure to live up to fans' expectations that led to their admittedly chill breakup. These days, they're both happily married; Rosales tied the knot with Kim Jones in 2014, while Hermosa is expecting her fourth child with Oyo Sotto.
Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder
How they met: They famously began dating in 1989 when Depp was 27 and Ryder was 18. The Edward Scissorhands co-stars' whirlwind romance was capped with an engagement just five months after their first date.
How it ended: "Winona Forever" became "Wino Forever" after they split in June 1993. In an interview with ELLE Magazine in 2009, Ryder called her high-profile relationship with Depp her "first real breakup" and "first heartbreak." To this day, a lot of die-hard fans of the quintessential '90s pairing still have their fingers crossed for a reunion.
