(SPOT.ph) Ahh, the '90s. A simpler time of brown lipsticks, butterfly clips, and dance crazes like the "Macarena" and the "Butterfly" by the Universal Motion Dancers (remember them?!!). There were a lot of things that defined the era, including these 10 memorable TV shows. Before Game of Thrones and Stranger Things, we had these shows to keep us entertained for hours.
Oki Doki Doc
Aired: 1993 to 2000
Aga Muhlach played Doc Aga, a young veterinarian stuck with raising his sister's kids. The show spanned a very successful seven years, and starred a now-familiar cast that also included the late Babalu (as the kuripot balut seller, Babsy), Agot Isidro (one of Babsy's kids on whom Dr. Aga has a secret crush), and Claudine Barretto (the teenager struggling with puberty). The show eventually had its own movie in 1996.
Home Along Da Riles
Aired: 1992 to 2003
We just couldn't get enough of the Kosme family's wacky antics. The sitcom starred the great Dolphy as Mang Kevin, a widower raising five kids in their house along the railroad tracks. The series also featured the comedic talents of Nova Villa as Aling Ason and Babalu as the greedy Richy. Dolphy's real sons, Vandolph and Boy 2 played his fictional kids alongside Gio Alvarez, Smokey Manaloto, and Claudine Barretto.
Magandang Gabi, Bayan
Aired: 1988 to 2005
Nothing helped us bond more than being collectively terrified during Magandang Gabi, Bayan's annual Halloween specials. From aswangs to white ladies, Noli de Castro's special episode shed light on distinctly Pinoy history and culture to keep all of us up at night. (Pro-tip: ABS-CBN posted some episodes on their YouTube channel!)
Ang TV
Aired: 1992 to 1997
Ang TV did more than just popularize catchphrases like "Nge!" and "4:30 na, Ang TV na!" The daily, youth-oriented variety show featured a huge alumni roster that you will still recognize today. The show was such a hit that it spawned a Star Cinema film in 1996 called Ang TV Movie: The Adarna Adventure.
Gimik
Aired: 1996 to 1999
For the '90s kids within the pre-teen to teen bracket, Gimik was probably their version of #SquadGoals. The teen drama followed the lives of a group of friends who struggle with relationships, school pressure, broken families...you know, the usual stuff. The ensemble cast changed over the years, but the original lineup starred Judy Ann Santos, Rico Yan, G. Toengi, Diether Ocampo, Patrick Garcia, Marvin Agustin, Jolina Magdangal, and Bojo Molina.
Palibhasa Lalake
Aired: 1987 to 1998
Hagibis' "Katawan" might not mean much to today's teens but for the teens of the '90s, it signaled the opening credits of this classic sitcom. Richard Gomez, Joey Marquez, and John Estrada poked fun at what it meant to be a man, while exchanging witty lines with female cast members like Amy Perez, Gloria Romero, Cynthia Patag (remember her ribbon?), and Carmina Villaroel. Oh, and the Gwapings joined in on the fun, too.
'Sang Linggo nAPO Sila
Aired: 1995 to 1998
Noontime variety shows have always been a Pinoy TV staple. The APO Hiking Society's version first began as Sa Linggo nAPO Sila and changed names to reflect its new, daily timeslot. It was initially a ratings juggernaut but was cancelled after it couldn't keep up with Eat Bulaga. Fun fact: Before the infamous "Calendar Girl" segment polarized audiences in 1998's Magandang Tanghali Bayan, it was first introduced in this show to boost ratings. To no one's surprise, it was still met with mixed reactions.
Okay Ka, Fairy Ko!
Aired: 1987 to 1997
This decade-long fantasy comedy has the distinction of making rounds among major TV networks, starting with IBC then ABS-CBN and finally, landing in GMA Network. Before Vic Sotto beat a dead horse every MMFF, he was initially Enteng Kabisote in this TV series. He had many versions of Faye over the years and curiously, they seemed to get younger and younger. The original Faye, Alice Dixson, is still the best.
5 and Up
Aired: 1992 to 2002
Veteran journalist Cheche Lazaro produced and hosted 5 and Up, an investigative program that featured mini-documentaries hosted by kids and pre-teens. If you grew up watching this show, you probably wanted a cool treehouse for you and your friends, too. The show was unceremoniously cancelled in 2002 but hey, at least it gave us Atom Araullo.
Sineskwela
Aired: 1994 to 2004
Sineskwela is best known as the show that made science interactive, interesting, and easy to understand. Each episode followed Anatom and Agatom as they shrink to the size of molecules and explore the scientific world. It was just one of the many educational shows that aired from the '80s to the early 2000s. Remember Bayani and Batibot? Of course you do.
