(SPOT.ph) Filmmaker Brillante Mendoza's directing of President Rodrigo Duterte's first State of the Nation Address was mostly met with mixed reactions. Some praised his work, others didn't.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News' Ginger Conejero, Mendoza defended his choice of camera angles and shots, saying, "Hindi naman lahat ng nanood admittedly ay film literate, pero 'pag babasahin mo 'yong mga sinabi ng mga film literate ay matutuwa ka. For those who don't understand those kinds of shots, it was really the intention to make it different from the past SONA."

For instance, plenty of people reacted to this camera angle (above), which Mendoza called a "power shot," explaining, "It might not look good when you watch it, but psychologically, it gives you that impression [of power and authority]." He also said that his directing style was "nothing new" for audiences who have seen his films.
He said he switched from angle to angle to keep the audience "interested," and added that he was still happy people tuned in to watch the State of the Nation Address (SONA). The director reportedly took on the job for free, saying working with the government would help his advocacies.
