New Orleans Saints backup quarterback Ryan Griffin was reportedly struck in the face with a champagne bottle at a New Orleans lounge last week, according to ESPN’s Mike Triplett. Griffin needed more than 50 stitches to repair the gash.

According to police reports and Griffin’s attorney, the second-year quarterback is considered the victim in the lounge incident. Griffin returned to practice on Tuesday after missing last Wednesday’s session that was open to the media.

Griffin’s attorney released this statement on the situation:

“We are unable to comment on the details of what happened due to the impending investigation by the New Orleans Police Department. We are confident that NOPD will do everything in their power to find the assailant, and bring this matter to justice. Ryan has been a long standing and exemplary member of the New Orleans community since his tenure at Tulane, and now as a Saint. Ryan thanks everyone for their support in this matter.”

A Saints’ spokesperson shared this:

“We are aware of the situation, and the matter is under investigation. Ryan has been exemplary as a Saint and he has our full support.”

Per a NOLA.com report, Griffin and his friends went to the Apres Lounge in the early-morning hours of June 7. Griffin told the police he “bumped into” some men in the lounge, exchanged some words and was then smacked with the bottle. Griffin was treated at a hospital emergency room before going home, where he talked with the police later that day.

According to NOLA.com, Griffin’s agent was not available for comment and the owner of the Apres Lounge declined to discuss the incident.

Griffin signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2013. He is competing with Luke McCown and 2015 third-rounder for the backup quarterback gig behind starter Drew Brees.
