They said that a city based on mortal sin and air conditioning would never work, but look at Las Vegas now. And then they said that an NFL franchise there would never happen — but wait, what’s this? On Aug. 20 the Oakland Raiders applied for trademark protection for the name Las Vegas Raiders, and when you get to the paperwork stage, that means this thing could actually happen.
It’s long been noted that owner Mark Davis was interested in Vegas — but many thought that it was merely a bargaining chip to get a better deal for a new stadium in Oakland. Hell, Davis even visited San Antonio and Mexico City as he “explored” moving the team there.
But this latest development changes the prospects of a Raiders move from “Hey, we should all go to Vegas some weekend” to actually looking up airline prices on Travelocity.

The trademark application covers various classifications, including “arranging and conducting athletic competitions, namely, professional football games and exhibitions;” “production of radio and television programs” and “providing sports and entertainment information” via a variety of mediums.
Applying for those marks doesn’t mean the Raiders will be moving — the Chargers did the same this year for “Los Angeles Chargers” — but it’s part of the work that they need to do to be ready to make such a move.
The Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee is currently reviewing a stadium plan that calls for an increase in Clark County hotel room taxes to provide the public portion of the financing. A recommendation is expected before the end of September.

The stadium plan, an effort between the Raiders and casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, calls for a $1.2 billion domed facility that would also be the home of an MLS expansion franchise, and UNLV football.
Vegas stadium looks like Carson stadium because the Raiders liked the look. No need to start from scratch. Big difference is the dome.
