The University of Findlay football team will try and make it two straight wins today as the Oilers take on Tiffin in a 1:30 p.m. Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.
Courier writer Brian Lester will be covering the Oilers today.

Conference championships will also be decided today in cross country as seven league meets are set for today across the region.

In addition, the OHSAA girls sectional soccer tournament kicks off today with a pair of teams in action.

Upper Sandusky will take on Mansfield St. Peter’s at 11 a.m. in a Division III girls sectional match at Riverdale. Mohawk and Ashland Crestview play in the second sectional game at Riverdale beginning at 1 p.m.

PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Grove boys, Bluffton girls second in NWC

VAN WERT — Lincolnview placed four runners in the top 10 to knock off three-time defending champion Columbus Grove for the boys crown at the Northwest Conference cross country championships Saturday at Van Wert County Hospital.

Colton Grothaus (16:36) was second, Logan Douglas (17:36) finished sixth and Lee Altenburger (17:42) was eighth for Columbus Grove but Lincolnview was able to edge the Bulldogs 36-39 for first place. Bluffton (164) was sixth and Ada (210) finished ninth.

The top five runners in both the boys and girls races earn first-team all-NWC honors.

Convoy Crestview’s Mycah Grandstaff won the race by edging Grothaus at the finish line when both finished the race in a time of 16:36.

Spencerville won its seventh straight NWC girls crown by outscoring Bluffton 38-51. Columbus Grove (58) was third.

Spencerville’s Karri Purdy defended her individual league crown by winning in 20:51. Columbus Grove’s Megan Langhals (5th, 22:45) and Leah Myerholtz (9th, 23:08) finished in the top 10 along with Bluffton’s Audrey Marshall (6th, 22:53), Ashley Schweyer (7th, 23:01) and Morgan Humphreys (8th, 23:05).

The coaches voted Bayley Tow of Lincolnview as the NWC Boys Runner of the Year and Karri Purdy of Spencerville as the Girls Runner of the Year. Lincolnview’s Matt Langdon was selected as the boys Coach of the Year and Spencerville’s Brian McMichael was tabbed the NWC Girls Coach of the Year.

Findlay’s Gaines, Stahl first team all-TRAC

FREMONT — Findlay High School’s Isaiah Gaines and Emily Stahl continued their strong seasons to lead the Trojans at Saturday’s Three Rivers Athletic Conference cross country championships at Walsh Park.

Both runners finished fourth in their respect races as the Trojans were fifth as a team in both meets.

Gaines earned first-team all-TRAC honors by crossing the finish line in 16:21.91, a little more than 17 seconds behind the individual winner, Toledo St. John’s Tevin Brown (16:04.15).

Toledo St, Francis outran Toledo St. John’s 44-56 for the team title. Findlay checked in with 135 points.

Oregon Clay won the girls team championship handily with a 27-72 margin over Toledo Notre Dame. Findlay scored 112 points.

Stahl crossed the finish line in 19:27.71 to lead the Trojans. Teammate Sarah Barwig earned second team all-TRAC honors by placing 12th in 20:21.69.

Oregon Clay’s Erin Gyurke defended her individual title by winning in 17:57.54, more than 45 seconds ahead of teammate Haley Hess.
