Berths in the Ohio High School Athletifc Association’s Division II girls state golf tournament are up for grabs today and we’ll have the latest on that and a whole lot more tonight here at The Courier.
Van Buren, Elmwood and North Baltimore will compete in the Division II girls district golf tournament at Sycamore Springs Golf Course beginning at 9 a.m.
The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team at Sycamore Springs advance to next week’s state tournament.
Three individuals, Miller City’s Liz Schimmoeller, Liberty-Benton’s Kiera Robinson and Mohawk’s Katelynn Kinley will also compete.
There is also a fill slate of prep soccer and volleyball as well.
Pandora-Gilboa visits LIberty-Benton in a battle of state-ranked BVC volleyball teams. In girls soccer, the last two unbeaten teams in our area, Liberty-Benton and Kalida, will both be in action.

PREP VOLLEYBALL: McComb one win from share of BVC title
DOLA — McComb’s Jenna Huffman spiked 21 kills and Brenna Dee registered 38 assists Monday night as unbeaten McComb racked up a 25-8, 25-15, 25-12 Blanchard Valley Conference volleyball win over Hardin Northern.
The Panthers (18-0, 7-0 BVC), the No. 2 team in this week’s Division IV state coaches poll, can clinch at least a share of the BVC championship on Wednesday when they travel to Leipsic (16-1, 6-1 BVC).
Makenna Babb had a solid all-around match with nine digs and seven kills. Maddy Roth was 11 of 11 in serve receptions and Emily Clymer, Hailey Huffman and Molly Leppelmeier each added five kills for the Panthers.
Hardin Northern’s Kylee Hooker had 17 digs and Molly Wilson added 12 assists and six digs. Cami Castle slammed seven kills for the Polar Bears (6-8, 2-5 BVC).

Nadler was 19 of 21 spiking with 14 kills, Gerdeman 13 for 15 spiking with 13 kills and five blocks and Gerten 13 for 17 spiking with nine kills as Leipsic, ranked sixth among Ohio’s Division IV volleyball teams, improved to 16-1 overall and 6-1 in the BVC. The Vikings will host No. 2-ranked McComb, 19-0 and 7-0 in the BVC, on Wednesday looking to knock off the Panthers and create a three-way tie for the league lead that includes Liberty-Benton (14-3, 6-1 BVC).

In a battle of state-ranked teams, Liberty-Benton got off to a quick start Monday to dominate Pandora-Glboa 25-12, 25-21, 25-9 in a Blanchard Valley Conference volleyball match.
L-B, ranked No. 7 among Ohio’s Division III schools, improved to 14-3 overall, 6-1 BVC. The Eagles will be rooting for Leipsic to knock off McComb on Wednesday and throw the BVC race into a three-way tie for first.

Ralston was 57 for 62 spiking with 25 kills and five blocks, 19 for 21 passing with 18 digs, and 12 for 13 serving. Schumm was 10 for 11 spiking with five kills and five blocks as Findlay, 11-7 overall, improved to 6-2 in Three Rivers Athletic Conference play and locked up the No. 3 seed for the league tournament that begins Thursday.

Oregon Clay entered the macthup 12-2 overall and ranked 19th in Division I. Clay and Findlay had been tied with Toledo Notre Dame for second place in the TRAC standings. Findlay’s win on Monday and Notre Dame’s tie-breaker edge over the Trojans (11-7, 6-2 TRAC) means Notre Dame will be seeded second behind Toledo St. Ursula (17-0, 6-0), Findlay third and Clay fourth when the TRAC tournament gets underway Thursday.

The Lancers improved to 1-9-3 overall while finishing 1-3-1 in conference play. Ada fell to 0-13 and finished 0-5 in the NWC.

Liberty-Benton’s state-ranked girls soccer team dispatched another contender on Monday, blanking Bluffton 6-0 in a North Central Ohio Soccer Association match and moving within a game of clinching at least a share of the league title.
Kayla Trevino scored four goals, giving her 27 on the season and a school-record 87 for her career as L-B improved to 12-0-1 overall and 6-0-0 in the league.
The Eagles have already beaten their closest challengers — Riverdale (6-1 NCOSA) , Van Buren (4-1-1) and now Bluffton (3-2-1) — and can claim at least a share of the league title when they host winless Ada (0-12-0, 0-6-0) on Wednesday. Liberty-Benton, ranked fifth among Ohio’s Division III girls soccer teams, completes league play Oct. 9 against Cory-Rawson (5-4-3, 3-2-1).
Trevino’s four goals allowed her to surpass the previous L-B record of 85 set by Hannah Lugabihl from 2004-07.

DISTRICT GIRLS GOLF: Van Buren girls fifth; Mohawk’s Kinley leads area performers
ARLINGTON — Picking the state qualifying teams from the girls Division II district golf tournament at Arlington’s Sycamore Springs Golf Course on Monday was as easy as 1, 2, 3.
Huron, Edison and Defiance distanced themselves from the rest of the pack in landing the three automatic qualifying spots for next week’s state tournament on the Gray Course at Ohio State University. Huron easily topped the district field with a 339 team total, Edison had a 350 and Defiance a 373. No other school was within 15 strokes of the leaders.
Van Buren finished fifth in the 15-team field with a 391 total, North Baltimore tied for ninth (401) and Elmwood was 13th (414).
Erin Neall’s 42-46—88 highlighted Van Buren’s 391 total. Ashley Overmyer, Emily Foust and Zoie Nieto all carded 101s for the Black Knights.
North Baltimore’s Rachel Peters tied for ninth in the medalist rankings with an 87. Morgan Rose shot a 104 and Lindsay Davis and Kelcie Bean checked in with 108s to complete the Tigers first appearance in the girls district tournament.
Taylor Carr carded a 96 and Savannah Baker a 97 to lead Elmwood. Sierra Semko came in at 108 and Alexis Miller at 113.
Mohawk’s Katelynn Kinley was the top area golfer as she finished with a 38-44—82. Liberty-Benton’s Kiera Robinson (46-51—97) and Miller City’s Liz Schimmoeller (42-47—89) also played in the tournament as individuals.
Lakota’s Makayla Dull was the district medalist with an even-par 72 and led a group of three golfers advancing to state from non-qualifing teams. Also advancing were Shelby’s Alexis Jones (75) and Coldwater’s Kelsey Koesters (77).
Golf tournament action continues this week with Findlay’s boys team competing in today’s Division I sectional at Bowling Green’s Stone Ridge Golf Club and Findlay’s girls playing at Sycamore Springs on Wednesday in the Division I sectional.
District competition will be held Thursday, with Division II teams competing at Red Hawk Golf Club and Division III teams teeing off at Stone Ridge.

ELIDA — Corrine Hoffman won her match at No. 2 singles and Findlay High’s girls tennis team swept both doubles matches in posting a 3-2 noconference win over Elida on Monday.
Hoffman topped Meredith Little 6-0, 6-3 and the Trojans’ doubles teams of Emma Miller and Erin Bosse (No. 1) and Rachelle Crow and Jenna Burget (No. 2) completed the win. Miller and Bosse defeated Elida’s Haley Hurst and Ashley Fay 6-3, 6-1, and Crow and Burget topped Summer Slusher and Elizabeth White 6-0, 6-3.
Elida (8-7) earned two wins in singles, including a three-set 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win by C’era Savage over Savannah Hosey at No. 1. At No. 3 singles, Jacey Higby doubled up Findlay’s Kaitlin Coward 6-3, 6-3.
Findlay (7-11) completes its regular season schedule today at Napoleon. The Trojans will then host the Division I sectional tournament beginning Thursday and wrapping up on Saturday at the FHS Courts.
