Premier League clubs have spent more than £1 billion on transfers in a single season for the first time, beating last season’s spend of £965 million with hours still to go, reports the BBC.
In the January window £130 million has been spent, but with clubs having until 11pm GMT to register deals more cash could still be splashed.
Newcastle have already spent £29 million on Jonjo Shelvey, Andros Townsend and Henri Saivet, with a £21 million bid for West Brom striker Saido Berahino having been turned down.
In the 2003-2004 season only £265 million was spent on players, a figure which could be quadrupled this season if £60 million is spent today.
