Last season has already been dubbed the “Year of the Prospect” due to the historic wave of talented rookies that entered the majors. Although this year’s prospect crop can’t match either the depth or star power of last year’s rookie class, there’s still plenty of talent on the 2016 Top 50 rankings that will have an impact in fantasy baseball leagues.

While the top 20 or so prospects are relatively safe, high-ceiling players, the remainder of the list contains many question marks. In particular, this year’s prospect group includes a large number of young, athletic, but still unproven shortstops. In fact, five of the six shortstops in the second half of the rankings (Ozzie Albies, Franklin Barreto, Jorge Mateo, Raul Mondesi, and Gleyber Torres) could see their value shift substantially up or down depending on how (and whether) they continue to develop in 2016.

Similarly, there are a number of righthanded pitchers with plus stuff whose future is clouded by having been injured for much or all of 2015 (Archie Bradley, Kyle Zimmer, Hunter Harvey, and Jameson Taillon). With these hurlers, we should know relatively quickly whether they will bounce back but in each case their elite stuff, high ceiling, and (except for Harvey) proximity to the majors make them worthy of attention.

As I’ve done in all previous years, I’ve included international professional free agents in my rankings. While some rankings choose to omit these players due to their age and experience, I include them for three reasons: 1. They meet the MLB rookie eligibility requirements that are standard for all prospect lists; 2. MLB treats them as having rookie status; 3. They have no MLB track record, so their big league performance requires projection and analysis.

Two international free agents signed this offseason made my list: Twins DH Byung-ho Park and Dodgers RHP Kenta Maeda. Despite having probably the best nickname ever (The Final Boss), Cardinals RHP Seung-hwan Oh didn’t make my Top 50 because his setup role provides limited value, and his fastball/slider combo is good but not great.

In addition to the elite players in these rankings, there are several dozen other prospects who could have an impact in 2016. I’ll cover some of these guys in a later preseason report, and then, as usual, I’ll travel to both Florida and Arizona to get a first-hand look at the prospects competing for jobs in big league spring training.

Seager impressed in a late-season call-up (.337/.425/.561 in 98 at-bats) and is poised to open the season as the Dodgers starting shortstop. At the plate, Seager has all the tools to hit for both power and average – plus bat speed, great balance, excellent hand-eye coordination, and good pitch recognition. A merely adequate defender, he will eventually have to move to third base, but his 30-HR potential makes him an elite offensive prospect nevertheless
http://images.performgroup.com/di/library/sporting_news/70/5d/corey-seager-100115-getty-ftrjpg_1nslcpnq3aix810iqma78kljun.jpg?t=596306720
/di/library/sporting_news/70/5d/corey-seager-100115-getty-ftrjpg_1nslcpnq3aix810iqma78kljun.jpg?t=596306720
In his first taste of pro ball in the United States, the switch-hitting Moncada’s performance nearly matched the hype (.278/.380/.438 with 49 stolen bases in 81 games at low-A). A comebacker that caught him in the head ended Bradley’s rough 2015 big league debut (5.80 ERA and 22 walks in only 36 innings), and he enters this season facing increased competition from a suddenly crowded D-backs rotation. Like many power pitchers, Bradley has a plus fastball, above-average breaking ball, and developing change. If he can maintain the improvement he showed in his command during the second half of 2015, he could see a midseason return to the majors, where his stuff profiles as a No. 3 starter.

http://images.performgroup.com/di/library/sporting_news/c3/d0/archie-bradley-ftr-gettyjpg_xkm5mgjgub5q1mlottlywdief.jpg?t=181765237
/di/library/sporting_news/c3/d0/archie-bradley-ftr-gettyjpg_xkm5mgjgub5q1mlottlywdief.jpg?t=181765237
After an outstanding career in Japan, the 27-year-old Maeda was signed by the Dodgers in the offseason and should slot in as the club’s No. 4 starter this year. Alford is still learning how to utilize his tools, but his excellent plate discipline, above-average hand-eye coordination, and plus speed give him a solid floor as a productive leadoff hitter.
