Is there anything more quintessentially Halloween-y than witches? They are an icon of the holiday and I've always loved them. One of my earliest memories of Halloween was my mom sewing me the cutest Halloween costume, complete with a custom broom she hand-stitched Halloween ribbon on (see photo above)! We picked out the fabric together and she sewed it from a pattern. It is one of my favorite costumes that I've ever worn, just because all the love and care my mom put into it. It is this memory that has made me want to dress up like a witch again this Halloween!

Naturally, I needed some costume inspiration, as witches come in all styles and looks, and I don't think I can fit in my costume my mom made me anymore! So I turned to some of my favorite witches from books and films to provide some bewitching ideas!

American Horror Story: Coven - the modern witchy look that

many have been rocking for quite a few years now!

Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter - if you're going for

that edgy, crazed witch look!

The Craft witches - go schoolgirl goth with everyone's fave

'90s teen witches!

Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau from AHS: Coven -

based on the real voodoo priestess from New Orleans,

this costume will make you stand out from the others.

Evil Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer - cuz who doesn't love

when Willow goes all badass and crazy?

Professor Minerva McGonagall from Harry Potter -

you could dress as almost anyone from Harry Potter,

but I do love Professor McGonagall's no-nonsense style.

Witches from The Lords of Salem - the hooded figures remind me of

Alexandre-Marie Colin's painting "The Three Witches from Macbeth"

and the old crone image of a witch would certainly stand out from

all the pretty or cute witch costumes!

The Red Witch, Melisandre, from Game of Thrones -

a long red wig and a gorgeous red dress and you'll

be warning people that "the night is dark and full

of terrors!"

Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty or from the movie - one of my
favorite witches, with a decidedly iconic look!

Sabrina the Teenage Witch - you could also dress

like a funky '90s teen like she did in the show!

The Sanderson Sisters, Hocus Pocus - need I say more? Such

perfect costumes for a trio!

Crone of the Western Woods in Sleepy Hollow - I love how

this look is all gauzy grays and soft spiderwebbed whites.

I think it would make a really stunning costume!

Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz -

for that classic witch look of black pointy hat and

flowing black dress and robes.

Louise Miller, the Teen Witch - witches go totally '80s!

The Witch's 17th century costumes are just gorgeous and

are wonderful inspiration if you want to take your witch

costume back to the era of witch scares and trials.

The White Witch from The Chronicles of Narnia;

witches don't always have to wear black.

The Grand High Witch from The Witches

Witches-in-training from The Worst Witch

Samantha from the '60s TV show Bewitched!

All you need is a blond wig, some mod clothes,

and the ability to wiggle your nose!

Mad Madam Mim from Disney's The Sword in the Stone

I love how dressing up as a witch can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it and that there is so much inspiration for whichever direction you decide to go in!

Who are your favorite witches? Have you ever dressed up as a witch for Halloween?
