06:10 - The Good Wife Spinoff - Paul Guilfoyle & Bernadette Peters to Recur

The upcoming The Good Wife followup series has cast CSI veteran Paul Guilfoyle and Tony-winning actress Bernadette Peters as recurring. Additionally, the series’ executive producer Brooke Kennedy has been tapped to direct the opening episode.

Kennedy is a long-time collaborator of The Good Wife creators/executive producers Robert and Michelle King and served as an executive producer/director on both of their series for CBS, The Good Wife and the recent BrainDead. The Kings then recruited her as an executive producer on The Good Wife spinoff for CBS All Access, CBS’ VOD and live streaming service. This is the fourth series on which veteran TV producer Kennedy will direct — she made her debut behind the camera on Third Watch — and her first time directing the key pilot/premiere episode that sets the look and tone of a series. Despite the current push in the industry to open up the directing field to female directors, drama pilots have remained dominated by male directors, so Kennedy’s assignment helps put a crack in that glass ceiling.

Guilfoyle will play Henry, Maia’s (Leslie) father, a wildly successful financial advisor who is phenomenally wealthy and universally loved. Peters will play Lenore, Maia’s (Rose Leslie) mother, Lenore, who came from a tough working-class background and is a natively brilliant financial whiz. Lenore expanded Henry’s fortune through their family’s private investment firm that is the envy of the financial world. Henry, Lenore and Maia are the unofficial First Family of Chicago.

19:40 - The Zipcoders - 1960's Family Music Comedy in Development at ABC from Viola Davis

Viola Davis and Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions has sold a second project to ABC, single-camera comedy The Zipcoders.

Written by Marshall Todd (Barbershop), The Zipcoders is about a divorced mother of three who moves her family to the East Side of Austin, Texas, soon after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., in an effort to be closer to her estranged sister. Once there, her teenage son forms a rock ‘n’ roll band, to the utter bewilderment of friends, family and the community at large.

Davis and Tennon executive produce through JuVee. Todd co-executive produces. ABC Studios, where JuVee inked an overall deal in April, is the studio.

“The Zipcoders is near and dear to my heart,” Tennon said. “Viola and I love what Marshall Todd put on the page — the world, the characters and a fun-loving take on music, relationships, dreams and family. Over our conference room door is etched ‘Dream Big, Dream Fierce’ and this show really underlines that ethos.”

The Zipcoders stems from an original idea developed at JuVee about a group of teenage friends growing up in East Austin who aspire to be a rock band like the Beatles. With the image of a group of African-American teenagers with feathered hair and bell bottoms in the middle of the Deep South, the company met with potential writers. The producers went with Todd who, after doing some research on late-’60s America, found immediate parallels to the issues the country is dealing with today — politically, racially and musically.

“This project gives me the opportunity to tell a story that, while specific to the African-American experience, doesn’t travel in the usual tropes,” Todd said. “As a parent I was inspired to tell a story from the dual perspective of parents and children in a world where the rules are constantly changing. Music has always been a passion of mine, and to be able to use it to inform this particular narrative was a provocative challenge.”

02:45 - MOVIES: God Particle - Announced as the Next Film in J.J. Abrams' Cloverfield Series

The mysterious upcoming J.J. Abrams film ”God Particle” will be the latest movie connected to the producer’s cult hit “Cloverfield,” an insider familiar with the project told TheWrap.

Not only will “Particle” be the third in a series of connected “Cloverfield” films, but Abrams and studio partner Paramount Pictures are quietly developing more movies for the shared universe, the individual said. Both parties hope to release a new film in the shared “Cloverfield” each year, the insider added.

Paramount declined to comment on the matter. Abrams’ company Bad Robot did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

“Particle” is about a team of astronauts who make a “shocking discovery” and end up fighting for survival in what is described as an altered reality. Julis Onah (“The Girl Is in Trouble”) directed from a script by Oren Uziel. It stars David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Brühl and Chris O’Dowd.

The film is set to open wide on Feb. 24, 2017 — though footage from the project is expected to be presented to reporters on Thursday in New York. Studio head Brad Grey will personally present highlights from the upcoming slate at the event, and do a similar event on Nov. 2 in Los Angeles on the Paramount lot. The insider was present at an event leading up to those presentations.
