19:50 - MOVIES: Justice League Dark - Doug Liman to Direct
Warner Bros is continuing to explore other corners of the DC Universe beyond the core heroes such as Superman and Batman, this time putting the spotlight on its supernatural heroes.
The studio is tapping Doug Liman to direct Justice League Dark, breathing new life in its supernatural adventure project.
Dark was a fairly recent DC title that grouped together heroes such as John Constantine (who was the title character of a solo 2005 movie that starred Keanu Reeves), Deadman, Shade the Changing Man, Zatanna and Swamp Thing (who has his own Wes Craven-directed pic in 1982), among others.
The project was in development for several years as a directing vehicle for del Toro, a master of the macabre who tastes seemingly lined up with the material.
Del Toro will still be a producer on the project but Liman’s boarding signals a tonal shift for the project.
Liman is known for his kinetic and propulsive action movie sensibilities thanks to his hits such as The Bourne Identity and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. He worked with Warners on 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow, the well-reviewed and well-regarded sci-fi time travel movie that starred Tom Cruise.

19:50 - The Goldbergs - Season 4 - Lea Thompson & Joanna Kerns to Direct Episodes
ABC's The Goldbergs is welcoming a pair of 1980s icons to its ranks.
The 1980-something-set comedy, inspired by the life of showrunner Adam F. Goldberg, has tapped Lea Thompson (Back to the Future) and Joanna Kerns (Growing Pains) to each direct episodes of season four. Their episodes will air later this fall.
"I am so excited to be working with Joanna Kerns and Lea Thompson!" Goldberg tells THR. "They've played such big and influential roles in some of the most iconic and personally impactful TV and movies. Frankly, their work from the '80s inspired me to be the writer I am today. I’ve already had Lea sign my hoverboard and geeked out about Growing Pains with Joanna."
Kerns starred as Maggie Seaver for seven seasons on ABC's Growing Pains, where she also directed. Since then, she has emerged as a go-to TV director, helming installments of series including Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Jane the Virgin, Pretty Little Liars, Nashville, Switched at Birth, ER, Dawson's Creek, Ally McBeal and several more.
"I feel privileged to be directing The Goldbergs this season," Kerns said. "I love this show; it makes me happy. The scripts are laugh-out-loud funny and this cast is impeccable. As I prep my first episode right now and walk around the sets, it makes you realize how much our lives have changed since the '80s. Adam has truly captured every nuance. My show, Growing Pains, first aired in 1985 so I can't help but think that maybe Adam and his family sat on their couch and watched the Seavers on Tuesday nights. Maybe? I'm also pleased that the talented and funny Lea Thompson will be directing this season so there will be two women in the directing chair and looking forward to the day that won't be news."

19:45 - MOVIES: The Croods 2 - Gets Rewrite from Hageman Brothers
EXCLUSIVE: Kevin and Dan Hageman, the screenwriting brothers who came up with the story for Warner Bros’ blockbuster The Lego Movie, have just been hired by DreamWorks Animation to rewrite The Croods 2, the sequel to studio’s 2013 film that grossed $587.2M worldwide.
The film was supposed to be released on December 22, 2017, by 20th Century Fox, but the studio recently put The Story of Ferdinand in its place after DWA sold to NBCUniversal. Since The Croods 2 now is outside of Fox’s distribution contract, Universal Pictures will be announcing a new date for the animated family film for sometime in 2018.
DWA today announced its new executive team over at NBCUniversal, which acquired the company earlier this year for $3.8B (the sale completed officially yesterday).
The Hageman brothers are a proven entity, also working with director Guillermo del Toro on his Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark at CBS Films, which is an adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s popular children’s book trilogy. The writing duo are also working with the director on Netflix’s Trollhunters, the family-friendly event series that will bow in December. In addition, they also wrote for the animated Ninjago Lego movie — they were writers and EPs on the TV series Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu — and previously co-wrote the script for Hotel Transylvania.

19:55 - Anne - Netflix Joins CBC’s Anne Of Green Gables TV Adaptation
Netflix has joined with Canada’s CBC and Miranda de Pencier’s Northwood Entertainment on upcoming drama series Anne. From showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett, it’s based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic novel Anne Of Green Gables and now has Niki Caro (Whale Rider) aboard to direct the two-hour premiere episode. The series was originally greenlit by the CBC in January and will air next year. Netflix has it globally outside Canada.
Breaking Bad alum Walley-Beckett is writing the entire first eight-episode season with de Pencier’s Northwood producing. A start date has been scheduled for next month in Ontario.
Set in 1890, the coming-of-age series will focus on a young girl who, after an abusive childhood spent in orphanages and the homes of strangers, is mistakenly sent to live with an elderly spinster and her aging brother. Over time — and thanks to her unique spirit, fierce intellect and brilliant imagination — 13-year-old Anne will transform their lives and eventually the small town in which they live.
The series will honor the foundation of the book, but will incorporate new adventures reflecting themes of identity, sexism, bullying, prejudice, and trusting one’s self.
Considered a Canadian treasure, the novel was riginally published in 1908 and has sold more than 50M copies. It’s been adapted myriad times for the stage, and big- and small-screens.

19:45 - American Horror Story - Season 7 & 8 Planned
Seven and eight? How long do you foresee the series going, and when do you plan to have the seasons really start to come together?
You'll see it this season, and then you'll really see it after this season. We lay a lot of pipe, and you'll see it explode in seasons seven and eight. They haven't officially been picked up yet by John Landgraf — he and I always talk at the end of the year and decide how many we want to do. But John has always said, and I have always agreed, that this is a show that could be like The Twilight Zone and run for multiple, multiple seasons and have its own inner mythology. So that's how we're approaching it. I'll keep doing it for as long as we have the ideas and the momentum. I really love doing it.
