Make8 Windows 8 App Challenge

Make8 Windows App : OneDrive to rule them all (Current)

Here are the challenges for the month of June/July 2014. We would be looking for Universal Apps using OneDrive API which targets both Windows and Windows Phone for this challenge. For feedback, do drop us an email at win8sg@microsoft.com

1. OneDrive Temp Sharing

Doing a simple file transfer to a friend can be such a hassle. This app aims to solve that – users must be able to create and share files or folders, then generate a link and QR Code that others can use to access said files (tip: web service).

The files and link must then be able to be deleted after a number of days or downloads as set by the user. The key different from OneDrive sharing function is the ability to auto delete the file after the expiry date, and the ability to generate a QR code with an online link to the QR code.

Think of it as https://usetorpedo.com/ or https://www.wetransfer.com/ but with an application on Windows and Windows Phone using OneDrive’s service

During an event, real-time photos and videos can be essential. This app must allow users to create a new folder in their OneDrive which they can share to other users for viewing and writing.

Photos (optionally, videos) will then be chosen by other contributing users and uploaded to the specific folder taken from the mobile device. The host user must be able to invite their friends to contribute to the folder as well.

Bonus for applications is ported to iOS and Android too.

Migrating from another storage service is a pain. It gets worse still if the user decides to maintain both! This app must allow a user to migrate (copy from) or mirror all their data from these 2 competing cloud services (in particular, Google Drive and DropBox).

Bonus for applications which are able to sync their entire OneDrive (or select folders) with said competing services.

4. Saving Videos from Streaming Services to OneDrive

Nowadays, media libraries are moving to the cloud. Users love to stream their music and videos from various cloud services. What we need for this challenge is the saving part to OneDrive.

Unlike other video downloaders which download files to their physical hard drive, this app would allow the user to download a song/video from popular video streaming services and websites to OneDrive. The user should also be able to specify the quality (480p, 720p etc…), and rename the file before downloading.

For reference, you maybe check out MegaTube’s feature

Bonus if you could stream music and videos from OneDrive, refer to the challenge OneDrive Music Player below if your application has the capability to stream both Videos and Music from OneDrive

8. OneDrive Site Backup

Backups are paramount in maintaining a website. This app must allow users to backup files on their web server to OneDrive at set intervals. It can also include features to aid webmasters such as website availability monitoring.

There are a few ways this can be handled, we recommend supporting this backup service via FTP, GIT and SSH access.Bonus for capability to backup MySQL and MSSQL Databases.

9. OneDrive Split Sharing

Large files can take forever to successfully upload. This app gives the user the ability to split large files up into different chunks of maximum 2GB each, upload them to OneDrive, and set up sharing.

You might want to create a folder for each large file, and upload their chunks into their specific folders. The application should be able to re-assemble split files back into the original format.

10. OneDrive Safe Storage

One can never be too secure, can they? This app is an endpoint-to-endpoint file encryption which helps to encrypt a file/folder.

The user can choose from a list of popular encryption methods and enter a passcode. The app would then allow users upload the encrypted file to OneDrive.

It must also allow the user to download, choose the decryption method with password and decrypt on their end.

When a user tries to access the file from OneDrive web, the file should be encrypted in an unusable format.

Bonus if the encrypted file can be decrypted via other 3rd party services when the same protocol and passcode is applied.
