‘Sher Singh Rana-The End of Bandit Queen’

‘Sher Singh Rana-The End of Bandit Queen’ is the upcoming film, under making, based on Sher Singh Rana alias ‘Pankaj’, the prime suspect in the dacoit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi assassination case. On 25 July 2001, he assassinated Phoolan Devi and later surrendered to court.

An ambitious political activist from Roorkee, Rana had shot down Samajwadi party MP Phoolan Devi (also known as Bandit Queen) in 2001 to avenge the killing of 20 upper cast Thakurs by her gang in Uttar Pradesh.

Whereas, Phoolan was born to the Mallaah caste. She was married to older man at an early age. Social outcast after her when she left her husband to escape marital mistreatment, then a family feud resulted in her arrest and made her a victim of police brutality, which lead her to join a gang of bandits. She got married again and this time to fellow bandit Vikram Mallah. Later, a group of bandits belonging to the Thakur caste murdered Vikram and gang-raped Phoolan for three weeks. She somehow managed to escape from captivity and formed a Mallah-dominated gang, which in 1981 raided the Thakur village where she was gang-raped and killed 22 Thakur men in what came to be known as the Behmai massacre.

Interestingly, Rana had earlier been in news for his various feats, especially when he visited Afgahnistan to trace the grave of Prithviraj Chauhan, thereafter bringing his remains to India.

Rana reportedly said that after escaping from the jail on February 17, 2004 with the help of a friend Sandeep. He went to Kolkata, where he arranged a three-month Bangladesh visa. He also claimed to by a satellite phone worth thousands so that he can be in contact with his near and dear ones without being traced. Rana use to get something in between 15,000 to Rs. 20,000 per month as stipend for his personal expenses. He continued his journey, he flew Dhaka to Dubai, from where he proceeded to Kabul. Rana has somehow convinced the locals that he had come from Pakistan to restore Ghori’s tomb. He claimed that he found the grave of Prithviraj Chauhan, dug it up in the dark, packed some of the exhumed material in a bag and couriered it to a contact in Uttar Pradesh.

His stories are now being woven into a full-fledged feature film by producer JS Walia. Wish biopic titled as ‘Sher Singh Rana-The End of Bandit Queen’, the makers home to highlight Rana’s benevolent and nationalistic’ side. “We want to showcase his lesser known side through the film,” said the director of the film Muncher Wadia.

Muncher continued: “I had never heard of Sher Singh Rana until I was approached to direct the film based on his life. As I went through all the research during the process of creating the script I was amazed at his life story. Meeting him was inspirational. As I found him to be a highly educated, intelligent and polite person. The more I have interacted with him, the more I have come to realize that he is a true patriot at heart. I hope our judicial system will also view him in same way keeping in mind how he has done a great national service by bringing back the remains of Prithavi Raj Chauhan from Afghanistan. Where they were being subjected to daily humiliation. I am proud to know him and hope to see him released soon.”

J.S. Walia: “As per my research I found that Sher Singh Rana is very intelligent, disciplined, highly educated and very patriotic. Whatever he has done, I am highly impressed with that. He put his life into danger to fulfill his childhood dream of bringing back Prithivi Raj Chauhan’s remains from Afghanistan. And in that period he did not commit any crime even after getting offers from ISI and underworld. As many dacoits even Phoolan and some terrorists have been considered for mercy. He also deserves mercy.”

Indian Navy watches Tom Hanks’ Captain Phillips

An on-request special screening was held on 18th Oct

Mumbai, 19th October 2013: Captain Phillips, the movie that has taken the world by storm, has even caught the attention of the Indian Navy now. At a special request, Sony Pictures organized a special screening for the Indian naval officers, including the Commander-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, Shekhar Sinha in Mumbai on the official India release date of 18th October.

With very few movies being made on this very relevant and current subject, the theme of Captain Phillips seems to have found a connection with the officers as it deals with the hijack of a container ship and the kidnapping of its captain by Somali pirates. Captain Phillips is based on real life story of Captain Richard Phillips who was held captive by four Somali Pirates in 2009. Two-time Oscar® winner Tom Hanks plays the role of Richard Phillips in the movie. The movie which was recognized as one of the best movies of 2013 by Rolling Stone magazine is directed by Paul Greengrass.

Kercy Daruwala, Managing Director – Sony Pictures India said, “An extensive local word-of-mouth programme for the film has built excitement for this film. We are confident that the film is a commercial entertainer as well as a critical success and are expecting great things for this film in India, as has been the case in the US where it debuted strongly last week.

Commander- in- Chief, Western Command – Indian Navy, Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha commented on the film saying, “Captain Phillips is an amazing movie. The film is a realistic portrayal of a hostage situation. Captain Richard Phillips’ character played by Tom Hanks is also very inspiring.”

Captain Phillips recounts the true-life ordeal of Richard Phillips, the captain of a US-flagged cargo ship, the MV Maersk Alabama, sailing with a 20-man crew and 17,000 metric tons of cargo that was bound for Kenya in April 2009 when it was abducted by Somali pirates. The movie is already being pronounced as Oscar-worthy (especially for Tom Hanks’ portrayal) and received a standing ovation at the New York Film Festival recently.

Captain Phillips releases in India on October 18, 2013.
