Starting October 7th every Monday to Thursday at 9 pm

Mumbai, October 1st, 2013 – She is a student, a confidante, an advisor, a lover, a friend, a wife or a mother. A woman has various facets to her life and multitasks to fulfill each role to perfection. Tracing the journey of a typical Indian woman from the confines of her home to the limelight and expectations of political greatness is Sony Entertainment Television’s new fiction show Desh Ki Beti… Nandini. Starting October 7, Desh Ki Beti… Nandini introduces the story of Nandini, a strong, selfless and a socially aware girl who exemplifies kindness and humanity.

Produced by Rashmi Sharma Telefilms, Desh Ki Beti… Nandini, set in Delhi is a tale that showcases how softness and strength is so delicately juxtaposed in every Indian woman. Hailing from a middle class family, Nandini Pandey (Kirti Nagpure) is a 23 year old, compassionate girl, who works for a wedding planning organisation. At home is a retired government officer father, a homemaker mother, an unemployed brother and a sister studying in college, making Nandini the sole bread winner of her family. Her optimistic approach and ability to connect with anybody is what makes her the ‘mohalle ki laadli’. She is deeply patriotic and socially responsible, enabling her to be the youngest member to manage her housing society council. On the other end of the spectrum is Rajvir Raghuvanshi (Rafi Malik) a young, confident and wealthy young scion of a prominent political family. He has lived a major part of his life outside the country and has limited knowledge about the socio political situation of his homeland. He returns to his family, and especially to his mother, Gayatri Devi (Sujata Sehgal) who is an ambitious politician and whose only dream is to fulfill her deceased husband’s dream of ruling the nation. On the other hand Rajvir is passionate about music, is creatively inclined and has no political ambitions whatsoever. Rajvir and Nandini, the two unlikely protagonists’ whose paths converge to create a saga that forms the stage for exceptional developments and changes the trajectory of their lives.

Draw held for Round III of the HSBC Asian Sevens Series in India

Mumbai, India, October 1 2013: The Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) and Rugby India today held the official tournament draw for the India Sevens, the third and penultimate ranking event on the 2013 HSBC Asian Sevens Series (HSBC A7S).The India Sevens will be held from October 12-13 at the iconic Bombay Gymkhana club in Mumbai.

Officiating today’s draw were Mr Ravi Menon, Managing Director and Head of Strategy and Planning for India of Asian Sevens Series title sponsors HSBC; Mr Pramod Khanna, President of Rugby India; Mr Darius Udwadia, President of the Bombay Gymkhana and Mr Trevor Gregory, Vice President of the Asian Rugby Football Union and Chairman of the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union.

Mr Pramod Khanna, President of Rugby India commented on the impending tournament at today’s official draw saying, “I am extremely happy that ARFU has expressed full confidence in the India Rugby Football Union by giving us the opportunity to host the Men’s and Women’s Asian Rugby Sevens tournaments for the second and third year respectively.

“The India Sevens is truly special as it is also being held at the Bombay Gymkhana grounds which is the cradle of Indian Rugby. With the confirmation that 16 Asian teams will participate, we are confident that we will deliver a great tournament for the teams and spectators.”

2013 marks the second hosting of the HSBC A7S in India after last year’s successful tournament, which served as the final ranking event of the 2012 Series. This year India is the penultimate event on the circuit with the Singapore Sevens (November 9-10) determining the final rankings for 2013.

The top two overall finishers from this year’s Series will earn automatic entry to a qualification tournament for full-time spots on the HSBC Sevens World Series (HSBC SWS). That tournament will be held at the world-famous Cathay Pacific / HSBC Hong Kong Sevens in March 2014.

This year there are 12 core men’s teams, (those taking part in all four ranking tournaments), competing on the HSBC A7S, up from 10 last year. Those teams are Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Chinese Taipei, Singapore, China and the United Arab Emirates.

To date, the Series has been a repeat of 2012 with defending HSBC A7S champions Hong Kong and last year’s runners-up Japan running neck and neck in the stakes for Asian Sevens bragging rights.

But this year the results are reversed with Japan entering the India Sevens as the Series leaders. Japan beat Hong Kong in both finals to date on the Series with a 14-10 win over Hong Kong in the opening tournament in Malaysia at end August followed by a 17-12overtime win in the Thailand Sevens in September.

Those tight wins see Japan top the table on 24 points with Hong Kong one shy of the lead on 23 points. To date the Series has also seen South Korea and Sri Lanka in an arm wrestle for the third overall spot. Korea claimed the bronze medal by beating Sri Lanka in Malaysia, while Sri Lanka turned the tables in Thailand. The two teams are now tied third on 19 points followed by Thailand in fifth on 14 points.

For South Korea and Sri Lanka to have a chance at securing their place in the Hong Kong Sevens the teams will have to upset the current form book and hope that Japan and Hong Kong fail to reach the semi finals starting in Mumbai.

Both teams are capable of the feat with Korea winning the Shanghai Sevens for three years in a row from 2010 to 2012 while Sri Lanka has shown continual progress over the past two seasons.

Last year, Sri Lanka won the Bowl in Borneo and the Plate in Shanghai, Mumbai and Singapore. This year they have reached their first cup semi finals in three years of ARFU sevens competition, reaching and then winning the bronze medal match in Malaysia and Thailand respectively.

Should either team reach and win a cup semi final it would be the first non Hong Kong v Japan final since the Shanghai Sevens last year.

Sixteen teams will take part in the India Sevens with the 12 core teams joined by the hosts, winners of the Shield championship on their 2013 debut earlier this month in Thailand, and invited regional teams Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan.

Based on the results of the Thailand Sevens, the top four finishers have been pre-seeded into the pools. Japan as the top seeds are seeded first in Pool A, while second seeds Hong Kong are seeded into the first line of Pool D. Third seeds Sri Lanka are in the first line of Pool C, while fourth seeds South Korea are B1.

The remaining teams are banded by their table ranking after Thailand and were drawn to complete the pools from the following bands:

The fifth to eighth teams overall Philippines, Thailand, Kazakhstan and Malaysia were drawn into the second line of each pool, while the ninth to twelfth ranked teams, China, Chinese Taipei, Singapore and UAE were drawn into the third and final lines of each pool.

The hosts India and the three remaining invited teams were placed into a separate pool (Pool E) for day one in India and will complete a round robin competition before being ranked numbers 13-16 overall based on their performance.Those teams will then be slotted into the Bowl and Shield competitions for Sunday competing against the bottom four core teams.

These four teams have been drawn into their Round Robin competition already with India opening the tournament action against Afghanistan at 11.00am on Saturday, before facing Pakistan at 13.20 and Iran at 15.20 on day one.

Hosts India should have the advantage of recent sevens experience after being invited to the Thailand Sevens. India performed creditably in Thailand, beating t Uzbekistan (10:5), Cambodia (29:5) and Laos (14:5) to advance to the Bowl quarter finals, where they lost to 9th ranked Chinese Taipei (0:24). India was then relegated to the Shield semi-final where they beat Cambodia (26:5) to reach the final. In the final, India upset HSBC A7S core team UAE winning handily 31-10 to take silverware from their debut outing.

India’s top scorer in Thailand was Sujai Lama with 40 points from four tries and four conversions. Surinder Singh notched 20 points from four tries, while Vikas Khatri added 15 points from three tries over the course of the tournament.

England Cricketer and Youth Icon Monty Panesar Pledges His Support for The Unity of Faiths Foundation

Monday, 30th September, London: London stood united last weekend when a series of events brought individuals from all backgrounds together, as world sport, religious and political leaders joined hands to pledge their support for the launch of The Unity of Faiths Foundation (TUFF), a UK based non-profit, secular organisation that recognises the importance of inter-community dialogue and acceptance as the bedrock of community cohesion and understanding.

A response to the increased dissonance, cultural and religious divide that has estranged communities, nationally and globally, TUFF, acknowledged by President Barack Obama and HRH The Queen, was launched with the mission to UNITE people and communities through the common factor of Faith, irrespective of religious belief, cultural or social backgrounds, and to subsequently create a more stable, tolerant and cooperative future for all.

In attendance were an array of dignitaries and public figures, including: the equivalent of the Sikh Pope who was in Britain for his first public visit, Akal Takth Jathedaar ji, Giani Gurbachan Singh ji Golden Temple Amritsar, India, Mr M N Khrisnamani, President of the Bar Association – Supreme Court of India, Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdel Salam Mraish Former Grand Mufti, Palestine, and Master Venerable Ji Xiu, Senior Master Buddhist Monk from China.

A unique ‘Torch of Unity’ procession began on Friday 27th September 2013, featuring 100 young adults from London schools, travelling on open-top Unity buses through Southall. The event reflected TUFF’s 2013 focus on Youth, the core belief being that in order to sow the seeds of respect and mutual understanding for each other early, it is vital to connect with the younger generation – the ‘voices of tomorrow’.

During the lighting of the Torch of Unity, Dr Sheik Ramzy, Chair of the Muslim Council of Britain said: ‘This is a unique and special organisation to bring every culture together all over the world. Let’s be united forever.’

Mr M N Krishnamani echoed this when he said: ‘Unity and variety is the creation of God.’

The former Grand Mufti of Palestine, Sheikh Abdel Salam Mraish said: ‘Everybody must be true to each other. I am proud to be with such a young group of people who are embracing unity of faiths.”

Following the torch ceremony, audiences were captivated by a series of keynote addresses by several VIPs who had flown to London especially for the launch. The event commenced with a welcome by TUFF’s Founders Ms. Anna Prior, a former art dealer from Mayfair and Dr. Shamender Talwar, a Social Psychologist from West London.

Dr. Shamender Talwar said: “Unity of Faiths is a journey we all need to be a part of. During the first festival three years ago we were surprised how positive the reaction was from the general public. We had postmen, fireman, lawyers and doctors all turn up and celebrate unity in the community. Six weeks later the London riots began and Southall, which was one of the areas considered to be hit hardest was not affected. The festival grew from 8,000 to 25,000 which is testament to the fact that communities endorse the principles of TUFF.”

Anna echoed this with, “We have lost love and care and we need to nurture it with action in the community – this is vital to achieving unity. Let’s do it together, understand and respect each other’s backgrounds in a multi-cultural Britain”.

Mr G.S. Malhi, a successful entrepreneur from Southall, also joined Anna and Dr Talwar on their Unity mission. He said: “From a young age, I have had a passion for oneness. What Anna and Dr Talwar were trying to do resonated with what I felt. Unity to me means togetherness, when we are not left out and not forgotten.”

Commenting on humanity, Akal Takth Jathedaar ji, Giani Gurbachan Singh Ii, said, “We may have advanced in the world in all ways of life but we are still far away from being united as humans. To achieve unity of faiths we need to first have an understanding of each other, and then we must allow each other the freedom to practice our own religions in peace.”

Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor of Ealing Councillor Dhindsa, commented, “Southall is known as a very multicultural town, we have mosques, temples and churches all within 100 meters of each other. The organisers couldn’t have chosen a better location to celebrate unity between different cultures.”

Reverend Derek Barnes said: “The message I want to get across is that we are all talking about one uniting factor, that sense of love. Whatever costumes we wear, underneath we are all the same, we need to break out of the traditions that we have been limited by and say to one another, we all share that unity of love.”

Closing the event, Pareena Swarup, the Honorable Secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association in India said: ‘When you were born you were born with faith, you had faith in your mother and father, you had faith in your home, you had faith in your country. You should have faith in every soul because if you are out in the street and something goes terribly wrong, you must have faith in the people around you to help you with your troubles. Believe in each other,

believe in every human being no matter what race, what age and what gender.’

Speaking via Skype from New Delhi, India, the event featured a surprise interaction between the young adults and Vikas Swarup, diplomat and author of international bestseller Q & A, adapted into the multi-BAFTA and Academy Award winning film Slumdog Millionaire. Vikas Swarup said: “This is an incredible initiative bringing us all together for the common celebration of our shared humanity”.

Some of the questions posed to Vikas Swarup by the young adults included “Why do religions argue with each other?” He replied with: “Because all of us believe we have a monopoly on what is deemed as the truth. It is only when we accept that truth is not one but has many forms will we develop harmony and live together. In Jainism there is a term, conditional regulation, which states that one should never make an absolute statement since we have only grasped one path and not the whole.”

When asked “What does faith mean to you”, he replied saying: “Faith is an important part of human existence as we all need to believe in something. Whether this is within us or in others.”

The poignant video promoting the work of TUFF was unveiled to the audience exclusively, featuring the murder of Lee Rigby in Woolwich, recent war crimes, extracts of petitions towards the Delhi gang rape case and the London riots, reinforcing the necessity of TUFF’s vision.

The landmark event concluded the third annual Unity of Faith Festival on Sunday 29th September 2013, with tens of thousands present. The festival provided London’s multi-cultural community from all backgrounds and age groups, an opportunity to connect, break the barriers of misunderstanding and prejudice against a backdrop of free entertainment, food, drinks and social engagement. The festival built up a groundswell of support to the message of UNITY, creating ‘Awareness’ to the concept of having FAITH in each other.

Youth icon and England bowler Monty Panesar joined hands with the unity team, interacting with groups of people who had congregated to see the cricketer. Commenting on the atmosphere at the Festival, Monty Panesar said: “Thank you for your positive energy and kind words. I hope to inspire the youth of the next generation”

The Festival featured an eclectic array of entertainers and performances from young children to adults, from lion dancers to operatic performances, showcasing the diversity that TUFF aims to promote.

Overwhelmed says Ali Zafar, “Confirming the same Ali says, “There was this girl who would wait for me for four days in my hotel lobby. One day she managed to catch hold of me when I was heading to the gym. She was excited but too nervous to talk. She handed me a bag with a few long love letters in them. In this day and age of social media, there’s nothing like an old school, handwritten letter. She said it was a gesture of love and I thought it was very sweet.”

Film “Music Meri Jaan” on the world of Reality Shows

A film based on the wide world of music reality shows in India, is ready for release produced by Vaidehi Arts.

A film that explores the reality of reality shows. A film that showcases the talent of 20 singers and dancers in the city of Mumbai selected from different cities of India these talented youngsters are hopeful of winning the show ‘Music MeriJaan’ produced for the top TV channel of India and take home 1 Crore prize money and loads of fame and name! During the course of their 3 months’ stay in Mumbai for the shoot of the show, the youngsters go through a variety of experiences, good, bad and ugly and are exposed to a whole lot of adjustments, uncertainties, jealousies, lobbying, pressure and a gamut of emotions! The contestants’ life during the shoot is controlled by none other than the show’s production manager played exemplarily by veteran actor Piyush Mishra who adds all the spice into their lives!

The film directed by Tanuja Shankar Khan, was shot in Indore, and boasts of excellent setting, peppy and youthful music, hit dance numbers and spectacular performances by its lead actors who are none other than Piyush Mishra, Paintal,Anooradha Patel, Amarr Upadhyay, Usha Bachani, SupriyaRaina, Kanupriya and some very good fresh talents who are debuting in this film and who had been handpicked by a pan India casting audition!

The melodious and dramatic music and background score of the film has been given by Atul Raninga, Anuj Garg, Vinayak Netke and Aslam Keyn, whereas the film’s cinematography has been done by veteran bollywood cinematographer Nadeem Khan.

The film’s art design and set has been done byKunal Bhandula who is an expert in reality shows’ set designing. And the mainstay of the film, its dances have been choreographed by Swaroopraj Medara and Himanshu Gadani.

Commenting on her debut venture, Tanuja Shankar Khan who has been in the field of media for last 19 years, says, “Music Meri Jaan attempts to take the viewers in a realm of ‘ reality shows’ through these twenty youngsters who represent the youth of today. In a day and age where nearly every Indian family has an aficionado of talent shows and reality shows, this film will take a peak in their minds and psyches and feel their emotions while they go through various emotions in their struggle to win, and wish to become famous through such shows. Little do these youngsters know that such name and fame are but transitory and ephemeral…like touch and go…but nevertheless enough for millions of Indian kids to appear for auditions over and over again. My film explores these emotions in manner that would be healthy entertainment and dramatic to say the least.”

Having completed the film, Music Meri Jaan is ready to release its poster, trailors etc and hit the theaters by end of 2013.
