Madhuri Dixit creates signature diabetes dance step for

‘What Step Will YOU Take Today’, a Sanofi India initiative

- A mission to get 1 million Indians to take a step towards spreading awareness about diabetes -

Mumbai, November 8, 2013: This year, Sanofi India Limited is marking World Diabetes Day (WDD) with the launch of its ‘What Step Will YOU Take Today’ campaign that encourages people to take proactive steps to effectively prevent, manage and control diabetes. Renowned actor and acclaimed dancer, Madhuri Dixit, joined this campaign as a goodwill ambassador to create a ‘signature step’ that will instill solidarity for patients with diabetes.

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has reported that the number of Indian diabetic patients would rise from 63 million in 2012 to 101.2 million by 2030. To prevent diabetes from gaining epidemic proportions in India, it’s important for people to become more conscious that it’s not just hereditary, but can also be caused by a stressful lifestyle. This awareness can prevent the early onset of diabetes, help in timely diagnosis, reduce complications, and improve control and management — and the overall quality of life!

The underlying message of Sanofi’s ‘What Step Will YOU Take Today?’ campaign, demonstrates through this symbolic dance step, that everyone – general public, patients, family members, caregivers – ‘can’ and ‘must’ take action for better diabetes management.

Ms. Joanna Potts, Commercial Operations Officer at Sanofi India, a company at the forefront of diabetes management, shared, “Through this campaign ‘What Step Will YOU Take Today’, we will encourage people to take a step – no matter how big or small – to better prevent, control and manage the disease. We are delighted to have Madhuri Dixit express her support to this initiative, and hope her dance step spurs people across India to join in, as we ‘step up’ for diabetes management, not just on World Diabetes Day, but all 365 days in a year.”

Madhuri Dixit was joined by 8 Diabetes Patient Champions from across India, who are winners of Sanofi’s 2013 ‘I Am A Champ’ National Awards, to perform this first-ever dance step for diabetes to a cheering crowd at High Street Phoenix Mall, Mumbai. This Award recognizes diabetics who have successfully controlled their condition, through treatment compliance, lifestyle management and most importantly, a positive attitude.

Madhuri Dixit’s step to encourage better diabetes management can be viewed on YouTube. Speaking about her participation, Madhuri Dixit said, “My step to challenge diabetes is through the way I know best – dance; which I believe truly unites people. With our country being second in the world, next only to China in its diabetic population, creating awareness about its prevention and management is critical. I am truly inspired by the eight ‘I Am A Champ’ winners who have shown that diabetes can be successfully conquered. I call on my fans to join this movement with this dance step, as India is stepping up to prevent and control diabetes. Show us ‘What Step Will YOU Take Today’!!”

About Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs as type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune disease characterized by the lack of insulin (the hormone that regulates blood glucose concentrations) production by the pancreas, and Type 2, a metabolic disorder in which there are two main biological defects: a deficient production of insulin and reduced ability of the body to respond to the insulin being produced.

Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are characterized by an increase in blood glucose concentrations (hyperglycemia). Over time, uncontrolled hyperglycemia leads to the macrovascular and microvascular complications of diabetes. Macrovascular complications, which affect the large blood vessels, include heart attack, stroke and peripheral vascular disease. Microvascular complications affect the small blood vessels of the eyes (retinopathy), kidney (nephropathy) and nerves (neuropathy). The global incidence of diabetes is growing at an alarming rate, with more than 371 million people worldwide living with the condition today. The International Diabetes Federation has reported that the 63 million diabetic patients in India in 2012 would rise to 101.2 million by 2030.

Mumbai, 8th November 2013: One of India’s leading event solutions company Maximus MICE & Media Solutions Pvt. Ltd. – led by avid runner and fitness enthusiast Milind Soman together with Reema Sanghavi – today announced the launch of the 2nd edition of Mumbai’s ‘Pinkathon – Run to Lead’, India’s first ever 10km run exclusively for women. The focus of the running event is to encourage women’s health and fitness and create much-needed awareness for breast cancer.

Former Miss India and fitness enthusiast Gul Panag was announced as the event ambassador and officially launched registrations for Pinkathon 2013 to be held in Mumbai on Sunday, 15th December 2013.

In the last one year, more than 10000 women from different walks of life have run in the Pinkathon in 4 cities across the country.

Maximus Events has also joined hands with the Women’s Cancer Initiative (WCI) led by Deveika Bhojwani and the Tata Memorial Hospital for the unique initiative. Like last year, well-known Red FM 93.5 RJ Malishka will be the mascot for the run in Mumbai.

Pinkathon 2013 has garnered support from some of the leading brands in the country. Prominent among these are Red FM 93.5, India’s largest and most awarded radio station as radio partner, Adidas, one of the leading sportswear brands in the world, among others.

Reema Sanghavi, Managing Director Maximus Events said, “It gives us immense pride to launch registrations for the 2nd edition of Pinkathon Mumbai. Mumbaikars supported last year’s run whole-heartedly and we are confident that the same will happen this year too. Our objective is to encourage women to take up fitness as a lifestyle and we continue to spread awareness on breast cancer and educate women about its causes and prevention by adopting a healthy and active lifestyle. I urge the women of Mumbai to register for the run, come forward and support our cause.”

Announcing the launch Milind Soman said, “Mumbai is where Pinkathon began. We are happy to be back, once again, with ‘Pinkathon Mumbai 2013’, which is transforming into a key platform for women to come together & take up a healthy lifestyle. I am proud to announce that over 10,000 women have participated in the Pinkathon in 4 cities across the country. Pinkathon has also strongly supported the cause of breast cancer awareness all throughout the past year and we continue to do the same year on year. Not many of us know that running is one among the top 10 ways to help prevent breast cancer, not only promoting well-being but also raising immunity levels and improving health to help fight diseases like cancer. We are confident that Mumbai will support the cause with passion and enthusiasm.”

Former Miss India and Fitness Enthusiast Gul Panag said, “A platform like Pinkathon will go a long way in educating people about the cause and prevention of a much-neglected ailment like breast cancer, and I am delighted to help further the cause. It is crucial that we do whatever it takes to raise awareness about breast cancer and help improve the lives of millions of women affected by it. Not many people know that it is among the curable cancers if detected early. I urge women to become more alert and aware about the disease and wish Milind, Reema and Deveika all the success in this noble endeavour.”

Awareness for the twin causes of women’s wellness and dealing with breast cancer are being further enhanced through integrated activities on social media and peripheral promotional ground events.

This amounts to 16,010 pages of board material each year representing a 67% uplift from the average of 10,000 pages reported the prior year.

· Board members per organization is increasing with 43% now having more than 11 board members, rising from 29% in 2012.

· Almost half of boards still rely on paper-based board books. There was a slight decrease in the number of respondents who distributed their board books electronically, despite an increase of members being located across borders.

· There has been increased focus on risk oversight with 84% of respondents saying their board actively set a risk culture and cascaded its risk policy to management. This is a significant increase from 2012 where only 57% of respondents said the same.

“Corporate governance is becoming increasingly complex due to demanding regulatory requirements and scrutiny on organizations’ compliance,” said Chris Perry, managing director, Risk, Thomson Reuters. “In this time of heightened risk, it to extremely important for companies to protect their organization from reputational damage. This survey provides insight and transparency into board governance processes to help provide the information needed to have better risk oversight and to tighten security gaps across an organization.”

Increasing Volume of Board materials

A large challenge lays in the amount of confidential information that board members are expected to retain. One quarter of respondents produce in excess of 100 board books per year with the average board book at 179 pages in length. This means that board members are sifting through 16,010 pages of board materials a year representing a staggering 67% increase from 2012. In addition, most organizations have many board members serving on multiple boards across the world and with the majority of boards meeting monthly or quarterly, this creates a huge volume of required supporting board materials.

Exposure to Security Risks

The survey results indicate organization’s lack of understanding of the security risks surrounding board communications. Both print based and electronic board communications contain huge security risks and gaps. Almost half of boards still rely on paper-based board books contributing to greater risk of sensitive information being lost, stolen or misplaced by printing and carrying board documents. Additionally, the majority of respondents admitted to having heard of instances where board members have left sensitive documents behind in public places.

Furthermore, there are still issues around electronic communications due to insufficient security processes. Over three quarters of organizations utilize non-commercial, unsecure personal email accounts to distribute board materials and almost half of the organizations do not encrypt board communications.

While the survey points out many risks in the distribution channels being used to disseminate board materials, another issue is in retention of information. Over 67% of respondents are not confident or do not know if their board members destroy all print copies of board materials in line with policies. With similar results in 2011 and 2012, this continues to be a concern and presents risks to organizations.

Board Security

The survey results indicate a lot of security gaps and risk oversight by organizations, but the results also note that there has been improvement from boards putting increasing importance on security measures. Over three quarters of respondents said that their board actively set a risk culture and cascaded its risk policy to management which is a significant increase from only 57% in the comparable 2012 survey.

Additionally, 52% of organizations now use a board portal to share their sensitive board information.

Private mobile computing devices remain the most likely place to store board documents and communications and in line with the increasing popularity, the results show a steady increase in organizations providing board members with secure devices for this purpose.

The board has become increasingly involved in understanding regulatory change and overseeing implementation according to respondents. Involvement has increased from 2012 substantially with 49% actively setting culture and policy and pushing for “gold plated” policies. With 12% not discussing these issues at board level and some respondents not knowing, there could be organizations at risk of penalties by not being prepared to manage the incoming changes to regulatory requirements.

World-renowned freerunning star and the victor in that first competition, Ryan Doyle, explains that each event is about the taking part more than the winning: “It’s more of an exhibition of different styles. The audience down on the ground want a winner, obviously, but there are no losers. The judges are judging the environment, not the athletes. It’s not 18 freerunners competing against each other, it’s 18 freerunners competing against the course every time – almost like 18 different tournaments.”

Crime Patrol to show the case of a Thane resident

Crime Patrol is all set to bring another spine chilling episode this week. The episode will revolve around life journey of Shiv Vartak, a 30 year old guy who is a member of the Quick Response Team, a division of the Maharashtra Police. The Quick Response team is headed by PI Aadesh Surve, who in April 2013, was at the bedside of his ailing father. PI Surve, was very close to his father and is shattered when his father didn’t survive. Putting aside the pain of his father’s loss, PI Surve joins back on duty. During his class with the Quick Response Training team, he comes across Shiv Vartak. It’s an introductory session in the class where the team members are talking about themselves. On his turn, Shiv tells him that he only knows that his father’s name starts with an “S” and has a vague memory of his mother’s name being Lakshmi. Shiv stays in a hostel in Thane. Finding Shiv’s answers to be quite puzzling, he asks Shiv to meet him after the class. Inside PI Surve’s cabin, Shiv shows him a tattoo on his hand which reads the name Shiv S. Vartak. Shiv tells PI that he knows his name and surname only because of this tattoo. Shiv reveals that he got separated from his family 24 years back. He had stepped out of his school along with two of his friends Billoo and Sanjay for an adventure, which he now doesn’t remember. They had taken a train and had gone to a station. Billoo and Sanjay had asked Shiv to wait at the station, saying that they would return to take him along. They did not return and after waiting for a long time, Shiv started getting scared and just wanted to return home. But he didn’t know which way to go or which train to take. He finally boarded a train and reached a station which was very crowded. He knew that it was not the station near his home but didn’t remember where his home was. Tired and scared he slept near a beach. The next day morning, seeing him cry, a lady accosted him. She took pity on him, took him to her home, gave him food to eat. He then started working with the lady’s son. He was pining for his home, did not have any idea about its whereabouts.

One day while returning after his day’s work, he met with an accident. He woke up in a hospital. Dr. Vaidya told him that he had been badly injured and had been in semi-comatose state for quite some time. He also told him that the lady who had taken him under her wings no longer wanted him. After a few months, the hospital transferred him to Anand Kendra, which was a home for orphans. Shiv started living at Anand Kendra. Knowing that he had studied up to 3rd standard, he was put in a school where he started studying. At the Kendra, the mess manager, Ashfaque Karim, fondly called Abbu by everyone became his friend, philosopher and guide. Abbu, made the children get up early and do exercises. Shiv was good at running. When he was in 7th standard, the Krida Prabhodhini authorities had come to his school to select candidates for athletics. Shiv, being a good runner got selected. He was then shifted to the Krida Prabhodini hostel in Thane. Here he continued studying further and also started participating in athletic meets. Several years later, the Krida Prabodhini authorities, encouraged him to apply for the police force as a constable. Shiv did that and was selected in the police force. Shiv now joined the police force as a constable on general duty. He worked for two and half years in general duty, when he was told to apply for the Quick Response Team. Shiv did that and got selected. He was now in the Quick Response Team. PI Surve is amazed hearing of Shiv’s journey. He asks Shiv if he ever tried searching for his family, his home. Shiv says that he did not try because he was not sure if he would be ever find them. Surve asks him if he wants to look for his family. Shiv looks on with moist eyes and says that he has been longing for his family, his home for long. The pining has remained dormant inside him for a long time and meeting PI Surve had rekindled the longing and hope inside him.

Will Shiv be able to find his family??

After accomplishing so many feats, will Shiv be able to overcome the biggest challenge that life had thrown at him?
