Celebs stand up for women’s security
Starting March 8, this Women’s Day, you will never reach out to the red-and-brown clad Me Mukti Marshall who’ll help you fend off miscreants. Smita Thackeray’s Me Mukti Marshalls initiative was launched today at the Bandstand Amphitheatre. Other than the Me Mukti Marshalls themselves, Smita Thackeray’s family members including her son Rahul Thackeray, sister Swati Thanawala, Jivika Shah, celebrities of the likes of Divya Khosla Kumar, Neeta Lulla, Leena Mogre, Shibani Kashyap, Vaishali Samant, Megha, Yogesh Lakhani, Dimple Nahar and many others were also part of the event.
The Me Mukti Marshall is your new friend-on-the-train who promises to be a strong companion until you alight. The team of 13 well trained women will travel on the Western Railway trains between 9.30 pm and 12.30 am between Andheri and Borivali and Mumbai Central and Churchgate to ensure you’re never alone. The women, trained in self defense, will be armed with a baton and pepper spray to protect you from trouble.
A unique initiative by the Mukti Foundation, the Me Mukti Marshalls understand your need for a companion on the local trains. The Mumbai local railway, once the city’s safe travel lifeline, has witnessed a steady rise in crimes against women. Statistics by the Mumbai Government Railway Police for 2013 state that there’s been a 80 per cent increase in cases of sexual harassment of women in the trains. Can we forget how a man got in to the ladies compartment of a western line local train and attempted to rape a nurse who was travelling alone in the unguarded coach last July? Or the case of a foreign tourist who was attacked on a train by a robber? Last year, data shows that there were 76 cases of crimes against women, including rape, molestation and kidnapping, registered between January 1 and November 30.
The Me Mukti Marshalls, a result of Mukti Foundation tie-up with security agency CISS, which is a team of women trained in basic unarmed combat, first aid and drills, will assist the Railway Police in their fight against crimes. With a baton and pepper spray, they will only deter an attacker before helping the victim take the miscreant to the police authorities.
“The police and authorities are doing their best to protect women in the railway premises. The Mukti Foundation appreciates their work and our Me Mukti Marshall is an effort to assist the authorities in curbing crimes and attempt to make women commuters feel safe during non-peak hours. Lakhs of women take the local train every day. Working women often return home late at night and at such times, the families are worried about the safety of their daughters and wives. Our Marshalls will be a friend and companion until the women get off the train,” explains Smita Thackeray, Founder-Chairperson, Mukti Foundation.
For the first few months, as a pilot project, the Marshalls will travel between 9.30 pm and 12.30 am on the Andheri-Borivali section and the Mumbai Central to Churchgate sections on the Western Line before expanding their presence on the Harbour and Central Lines of Western Railways as well.

On International Women’s Day designer Umair Zafar and diva Rituparna Sengupta team up to promote women embroidery workers
· Bengali bombshell Rituparna Sen Gupta pledges support to artisans and crafts persons
Mumbai, 8th March 2014. On International Women’s Day – 8th March, 2014, designer Umair Zafar and actress Rituparna Sengupta announced their association to promote women embroidery workers in India. The Bengali beauty has pledged her support to women artisans and crafts persons across the country and will support fashion shows and events that provide employment initiatives and allied media interaction on the subject to create awareness about the plight of women embroiders and the sorry state of affairs.
Says Umair Zafar, “Women are exploited in most walks of life or professions, but when it comes to artisans and craftsmen and particularly embroidery workers, the plight of women embroiders is really pathetic. They are not only monetarily and sometimes sexually exploited by their employers or mukhiyas or middlemen, they are paid much lower than male workers, though they work more diligently and honestly than their male counterparts. Some big names in the fashion industry including designers and brands are notorious for exploiting women embroidery workers. They will buy embroidery patches and work for a few hundred rupees by underpaying and bargaining with the near-starving workers who are forced to sell their crafts at less than half the market rate to save their kids and themselves from starvation. The designers then sell the same product after embellishing it, at 1000 times the raw material purchase cost. For example, a chikankari or other embroidery work produced in Lucknow is bought for Rs 500 per piece and then re-branded and sold in Mumbai and Delhi for Rs 15000. This is sheer exploitation of the poor workers and must be exposed by the media. At times, a few designers who are known to be close to some A-category Bollywood actresses will buy or order raw art work in bulk worth lakhs of rupees, and not pay the artisans for months on end. The artisans who take soft loans to fund the purchase of fabric, etc end up paying huge amounts in interest, which causes them great loss and hardships. Artisans have lost their homes and belongings due to such rogue (but well-connected) designers who fleece them of everything.”
Designer Umair Zafar comes from a traditional family of craftsmen and embroiders and both his parents – mother and father are involved in the trade. “My mother used to save money from her embroidery earnings to pay my school fees and ensured that I finished my diploma in fashion designing. I have a great attachment and affinity to traditional craftsmen and artisans. At a recent event at Lucknow where I presented my Chikankari collection, Rituparna and I were discussing the plight of chikankari and embroidery workers in general when I causally mentioned to her how women workers were exploited. She immediately agreed to be part of a joint effort to spread awareness about this issue and support the cause of women crafts persons and artisans.
On 1st March 2014, Sigma Rock presented Umair Zafar’s Chikankari Summer Collection 2014 at a glittering ceremony at the M B Club in Lucknow to promote the craft and enhance and encourage the craftsmen and karigar community which has suffered greatly due to neglect and lack of promotion. Bollywood diva Rituparna Sen walked the ramp for Umair Zafar and also distributed prizes and awards to achievers of Sigma Rock.

Nisha Yadav shoots with designer Randell Gomes on International Woman’s Day
Model and actress Nisha Yadav shot for Goan fashion designer Randell Gomes on Woman’s Day 2014. The theme of the shoot was “Affordable, Wearable Fashion for Women of all Sizes and Shapes”. This shoot was for Randell Gomes pret summer collection. Designer Randell Gomes had launched a pret collection last year called Mumbai Fashion Street Collection which is inspired by Mumbai’s fashion street at Dhobitalao in South Mumbai. This year he has introduced a new line of wearable and affordable clothes for women of all shapes and sizes under the same name.
Randell Gomes who was born in Goa but grew up at Dhobi Talao near the CST Railway Station and was fascinated by the variety and color of clothes available very cheaply on Fashion Street. Says Randell Gomes, “My sisters would go to Fashion Street every weekend. When I was a student at St Xaviers college, we would visit Fashion Street to buy bermudas, shorts and T -shirts which were available for as little as Rs 30 per piece. It was simply fabulous. Most of the stuff available at Fashion Street were export rejects and some of them were re-cycled clothes. But the joy we experienced getting an outfit within our limited budget was tremendous. At that time, shopping was fun and a great pleasure. With my new range of pret outfits for men and women, I want to make cheap fashionable clothes available for everyone.
I am glad to have Nisha Yadav model for this range. She is a good model and its fun working with her.”
