Sanjay Gupta gifts a new home in Goa to his wife Anu
The 2008/2009 recession had hit the film industry really hard. Everyone had suffered the economic meltdown. Sanjay Gupta was no exception. A couple of his films didn’t work at the box-office and he was in huge debts. It got to a point that he gave his spacious villa in Goa to one of the financiers on the condition that he would buy it back once he had the funds. When the time came to buy it back the financier refused to give it back as his family had started using it and loved the house which was fully furnished and designed by Gupta.
Says Gupta, “Yes those were difficult times. The irony of it all was that I had the home when I was single and when I got married I lost the home. And my wife loves Goa. If she had her way she’d settle there. So it was a very sore point for me. I had to buy her a home in Goa. And recently we came across this fabulous Villa in Candolim next to the Taj Aguada and it was love at first sight. We immediately closed the deal and are now busy doing it up in time to celebrate Christmas and New Year there. I’m so happy that I could get this for her.”

Indian director Somshukhlla makes her global mark with Sandcastle
Sandcastle, a simple film with a complex message written and directed by Indian debutante director Shomshukhlla has been nominated at several International Film Festivals including the Tenerife and London International Film Festival and screening in Hollywood LA Femme Fest.
The journey of a woman in modern India, finding her identity, Sandcastle will be screened at Hollywood’s LA Femme Film Festival at the Regal Stadium 14 LA LIVE, and has been nominated in the Best Foreign Language Feature Film category at the London International Film Festival (LIFF) 2013 and prides itself with four nominations at the Tenerife International Film Festival 2013 in London on October 12, including nods for Best Feature Film, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Cinematography.
Some important and rather poignant messages are conjured up in this bright and beautiful journey of a woman building her life. The ending is settling and although the film has its fair share of surreal moments, there is clarity to the communication of Sandcastle that reads much like a wonderfully crafted manuscript.
“The film addresses the unsatisfied longings of a seemingly comfortable middle-class Indian woman. India is waking up to good stories, with substance, new voices, ideas and perspectives, redefining the lost glory of story-telling. I am lucky that I am getting to be a part of it,” says Somshuklla.
Sandcastle tells the story of Sheila, (Shahana Chatterjee) whose upper middle-class life in India isn’t as perfect as she hoped it would be. Sheila is a home-maker, an aspiring writer and loving mother. From an outsiders perspective it would seem like she has the perfect life. Her husband is a wealthy advertising maverick and she is part of the elite middle-class of Indian society. But like the shifting of the sands, is it all slipping through her fingers? How will she build her own dreams? In all that she has, does she really have a voice of her own?
The story of Sandcastle reflects one’s belief in the ability to build a perfect life. But even in perfection there is emptiness and wanting. What is perfect to one person is misery for another. The film focuses on contemporary women in urban India and the changes in society that have moulded these women as an independent and self directing force of nature. Shomshuklla shows two colliding worlds of fateful acceptance and feminine Indian independence and individuality. The film focuses on contemporary women in urban India, and the changes in society that have moulded these women as an independent and self directing force of nature.
Interestingly, this laurel comes at a time when the director is ready to launch her seventh book of poetry ‘Easy’, has been a pop-singer with over nine albums, done fusion renditions of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s songs on a global platform, written column on relationships, formed her theatre company, Kali Theatre , writing original scripts, directing, designing, staging, producing and acting nine original plays. ‘We draupadi’s and Sitas’ an epic retold in modern times drew full houses at the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The film’s credits: direction, story, script, production and art design, Shomshuklla. Cinematography, Ritam Banerjee. Original music, Ankur Mukherjee. Editing, Shashi Kumar. The cast includes Shahana Chatterjee, Malvika Jethwani, Rajat Sharma and Uditvanu Das.

Hrithik’s flair for writing!
Hrithik Roshan’s Krrish 3 is a much-awaited film but looks like Hrithik is actually working on teaching the kids that education is the key to win over the world.
The recent example of the same is his association with Flair pens, where he as Krrish actually brandishes a pen, handing it over to the kids, encouraging them to pick it up and use the weapon mightier than the sword in the real sense. And from what we hear, there is a lot more to this Hrithik-Flair association.
KJ Rathod, who roped in Hrithik for the ad with flair, feels that there is a perfect brand-fit of Hrithik with Flair pens. “I think every superhero carries a social responsibility on his shoulders, We felt that Hrithik would fit in with the essence of Flair that aims at education being the key to a sound nation. And he was only too happy to join in.” Rathod is looking at few scholarships for deserving children to benefit from this Krishh association as well.
Here is looking at kids doing their homework with flair as their superhero Krrish would like them to go the studious way. With natural flair of course!

I will never flirt with Sangeeta Ghosh in real life – Ruslaan Mumtaz
http://www.bharatstudent.com/ng7uvideo/bs/news/0809/2969-Ruslaan-Mumtaz.jpg
Ruslaan Mumtaz the male lead of Sony Entertainment Television’s younger man – older woman affair show Kehta Hai Dil… Jee Le Zara would not want to get into a relationship with a lady elder to him in his personal life. “I don’t think any older woman will fall for me. Even girls of my age find me immature and I would have to really work very hard to convince them, (as my character does in the show) something that I don’t want to do in real life.”
This single guy who first began his acting career with films (MP3 – Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar) then goes on to list the top three attributes which make a relationship tick according to him. “Firstly I think there needs to be mutual respect, the ability to make the other laugh, and last but not the least a good physical chemistry.”
Though it is said that the first impression is the last impression, he still feels that for a lasting relationship, looks would still be at number three.
When asked about his on/off- screen chemistry with Jee Le Zara co-star Sangeeta Ghosh, Ruslaan says, “I am in awe of her as my character is. She has achieved so much in life, yet is full of energy and excitement. I need to kill my lazy part of me to match up to her.”
Ruslaan does not feel that it is no more necessary for him to flirt with his co-star to get the required chemistry on screen. “I have grown as an actor over the years and can now get any chemistry without getting to really know my co-star. I will never flirt with Sangeeta.”
To find out more tune in to Kehta Hai Dil…Jee Le Zara from Monday to Thursday at 9:30 pm only on Sony Entertainment Television

Aditya Birla Hospital is organising a Free Stroke Check up Camp from 21st Oct – 2nd Nov, marking World Stroke Day 2013
Pune: In an effort to help people reduce their risk of stroke (brain attack) and recognise the early warning signs and symptoms of the disease, the multi-speciality Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital, is organizing a stroke awareness campaign which would include poster competition, medical quiz between various medical college students and doctors, CME on Stroke and a Stroke Check up Camp from 21st October – 2nd November marking the World stroke day 2013.
“Stroke is a preventible diseases if detected in time. We urge people to come at the stroke check up camp for an early detection. We hope that people will benefit from this check up camp on Stroke Awareness Day by learning more about stroke risk factors, what they can do to reduce their risks and getting themselves thoroughly checked by the experts,” said Ms. Rekha Dubey, COO, Aditya Birla Hospital
Stroke remains an under-recognised and underestimated threat, despite claiming thousands of lives and leaving many of its victims severely disabled every year. 1 in every 6 people will have a stroke in their lifetime. According to a recent survey, the Indian youths are increasingly becoming vulnerable to strokes due to unorganised lifestyle and poor food habits. Hence its very important to know the symptoms and act fast”, said Dr. Mona Thakre, Neurologist, Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital.
Highlighting the global epidemiologic statistics on stroke Dr. Mona Thakre said, “Every six seconds, regardless of age or gender – someone somewhere dies from stroke (Brain Attack/Paralytic stroke). In India too, over 1.5 million Indians suffer stroke every year and about 30 per cent of them die and another 30 per cent are left with a disability according to a study. Over 20 million people across the world are hit by stroke every year and 25 per cent of them die. More than 86 per cent of strokes take place in middle and low-income countries. And, 48 per cent of people do not even know what a stroke is. Stroke (Brain Attack/Paralytic stroke) is the second leading cause of death for people above the age of 60, and the fifth leading cause in people aged 15 to 59. In fact, stroke is responsible for more deaths every year than those attributed to AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria put together. Hence it is important to undergo regular check ups and take necessary precautions and care to significantly reduce the risk of death”.
During the free check up camp, the experts from Aditya Birla Memorial hospital will thoroughly check the patients and outline who is at risk for stroke and also educate them on what are the early warning signs of the disease.
“Stroke’s are of two types depending on the mode of injury to the brain. ‘Ischemic stroke’ occurs when one of the vessels in the brain gets blocked and it leads to the death of the brain cells in the region supplied by that vessel and ‘Haemorrhagic stroke’ occurs when a blood vessel ruptures mainly secondary to hypertension and it leads to formation of a blood clot in the brain”, said Dr. Rakesh Ranjan, Neurosurgeon, Aditya Birla Hospital. He further added saying, “Stroke is in many cases is a preventable or manageable disease. Initial 4.5 hours is the most crucial period, as can be summed up in the saying “TIME IS BRAIN’. We must continue to better educate people on stroke and increase public awareness of the early signs of the disease”.
On an average, one third of sufferers are left permanently disabled. This is because many people do not recognise the symptoms of stroke, which include sudden:
- Weakness of face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
- Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Trouble speaking or understanding
- Difficulty walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
- Severe headache with no known cause
“Stroke is a medical emergency. It is important to take immediate action and call emergency services to get urgent medical attention. Survival and successful recovery is improved if symptoms are recognised quickly and immediate medical attention is given. The sooner a stroke patient receives immediate and long-term treatment, the more likely that long-term brain damage may be avoided”, said Dr. Mona Thakre, Neurologist, Aditya Birla Hospital.”Each of us must confirm our commitment in the fight against stroke not just today, but every day,” she added.
While there are some stroke risk factors that cannot be controlled, including family history of the disease, there are many factors that can be modified by making simple lifestyle changes. These changes include smoking cessation, physical exercise, losing weight, eating a healthy diet rich in fruit and vegetables or taking medications pertaining to the risk factors (Anti-platelet, Anti hypertensive, anti diabetic and cholesterol lowering medications). For some patients however, lifestyle changes alone are not enough to reduce the risk of a further stroke.

Sony Entertainment Television’s newly launched horror series ‘Bhoot Aaya’ will narrate the Raanchi based incident this weekend. This incident occurred with a group of girl Basketball players from Ranchi. They were travelling to Wardha for a match. There were still a couple of hours to travel and the sun was setting fast … And then one girl couldn’t help herself and requested the van to be stopped … She couldn’t hold herself anymore …. She had to take a leak … three girls got down at a secluded spot to relieve themselves … Rani was one of them. Rani strangely came across a secluded old well , on seeing the well, was in a way drawn to it, not knowing what got into her, climbed a little and peeped into the well, tempted by a universal desire she called out and the well echoed back. It was a strange echo… different … from her voice … She was suddenly in a trance like state … That’s when her two friends came and couldn’t help but stare at her … They found her standing akimbo … like a man … And then Rani collapsed. A raging fever gripped Rani … no one could make out what had happened to her. She was trembling with the fever and blabbering incoherently. The Coach directed the van driver to take a diversion to the nearest Medical help. They were just an hour away from the city they were supposed to reach. They were nearing the outskirts of the city. The sun had set. Rani was taken to a municipal hospital where she was treated … the fever seemed to be coming into control and she was subsequently shifted to a Dharamshala for the night.

The film is also opening in additional cities like Mangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai this week.
Narrated by Oscar winner and four-time nominee William Hurt, ‘Fire in the Blood’ tells the story of how Western pharmaceutical companies and governments aggressively blocked access to low-cost AIDS drugs in the years after 1996, directly resulting in no less than 10 million avoidable deaths in Africa and various other parts of the global south. The movie portrays the monumental change brought about by the small, unlikely group of people who decided to fight back against this deeply unjust blockade.
Shiladitya Bora of PVR Director’s Rare, which is releasing the film, said “We are absolutely delighted with the audience response to ‘Fire in the Blood’. I want to share that this film qualified for academy consideration and has consistently been on THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER’S list as an Oscar contender. After a successful UK and US theatrical run, bringing FIRE IN THE BLOOD home to India has been an exhilarating experience. I am confident that it will continue for another week and become the first ever Indian documentary to do so!”
Critics have been raving about the film:
“A powerful, urgent film. Don’t miss Fire in the Blood.” Rajeev Masand
“A horrifying portrait of greed and an inspiring portrait of heroism.” Anupama Chopra
