A Slice of Bai’s Life …
Mumbai, 21st August: There are over 10,00,000 domestic workers in Mumbai alone whose day starts at the crack of dawn. They set about hurriedly cooking, cleaning, washing and packing tiffins for their men and children. This is a normal day for women everywhere, one might say! Except that these particular women have to repeat the same cleaning-washing-cooking routine at other people’s homes several times in a day. Yet, the ‘Bai’ remains, perhaps, the most taken-for-granted service provider of the household. Does it ever occur to us that even our own Bai has a right to hope, dream and aspire for a better future like the rest of us?
Premiering on 26th August, Zee TV’s new show ‘Ek Muthi Aasman’ gives viewers a reality check and an insider’s look into the world of Mumbai’s unsung heroes – the domestic workers. The show is an attempt to sensitize people towards the trials and tribulations as also the hopes and aspirations of this underprivileged yet constantly struggling lot!
Actor Shilpa Shirodkar, who enjoyed immense popularity in the 90’s with hit films like Mrityudand, Khuda Gawah, Hum, Aankhen and Gopi Kishan, bid adieu to stardom and walked to the altar with UK-based merchant banker in 2000. Having played wife and mom for over a decade now, Shilpa returns to her first love – acting, with ‘Ek Muthi Aasman’ where she plays the lead protagonist Kamala Bai.
‘Ek Muthi Aasman’ is about making a new beginning. Kamala Bai’s character, through her own journey of hope, will set an example for millions of domestic workers to follow – where they will begin to believe in their own strengths, see a dream, set goals for themselves and work towards a better future. In a way, Kamala Bai’s character proudly declares, “Shuruaat Toh Mujhse Hi Hogi!”
The plot of the show centers around Kamala Bai who works as a housemaid in the affluent Kapoor household. She delivers her own child Kalpana at the same time that the Kapoor khandan bahu delivers her daughter Pooki. The show captures Kamala’s journey of putting her own maternal responsibilities towards Kalpana on the back-burner in order to double up as a mother for Pooki. What develops over the years is a tender bond of motherly affection between Kamala Bai and Pooki even as her heart longs to be with her own daughter Kalpana, for whose education, bright future and every happiness Kamala works so hard at the Kapoor household!
Also making a comeback to television after a long hiatus is actor Ashish Chowdhry who will enter the show as Vikramaditya Scindia, a 30 year old suave, shrewd, sharp-talking advertising agency head. Young Pooki and Kalpana will join him as interns. As a mentor, he will be the man to motivate Kalpana to scale her fullest potential. An interesting work dynamic will develop in the office between the trio wherein he will encourage Kalpana to stop seeing herself as subservient to Pooki just because her mother serves as a housemaid in Pooki’s house.
Child actor Mehnaz Mann who wowed the audience with her power-packed performances on Zee TV’s acting talent hunt show for kids, ‘India’s Best Dramebaaz’ has bagged the role of young Kalpana, Kamala Bai’s daughter.

Unfortunately, many of us turn a blind eye towards the hard reality surrounding the lives of our house-help and take them for granted despite their invaluable contribution to our homes. ‘Ek Muthi Aasman’ is the story of one such domestic worker and how she sets out to make a difference! It talks of the class divide that exists in Indian society and the struggle between the haves and the have-nots. It’s an attempt to present the reality of domestic workers and get more and more people to adopt the right, sensitive approach towards them.”
The show is produced by DJ’s ‘A Creative Unit’ with whom Zee TV goes back a long way and has together produced successes such as ‘Banegi Apni Baat’ and ‘Choti Bahu’.
In order to amplify the message of the show, Zee TV recently organized panel discussions across the country where social workers involved with the upliftment and support of domestic workers were given a platform to express their views. Domestic workers who have been successful in educating their children and single-handedly providing for large families were felicitated for their ‘never say die’ spirit!

Narayani the perfectionist!
Narayani, while shooting for the Janmashtami special for Beta Hi Chahiye on BIG MAGIC turned out to be a total perfectionist. While the perfectionist left no stone unturned to get things right, she was a hard task master for the crew. Being a trained kathak dancer, Narayani chose the song ‘Kahe Ched Ched Mohe’ from Devdas. She not only learnt the steps quickly but was the fastest to wrap up the shoot.
But what was perplexing is that she started instructing the dance coach on steps and expressed complete disappointment on the outfits chosen by the production team. The crew always had to be on time or before time to rehearse with her and the stylist was told that she would wear the outfit only when the necessary changes were made.
The crew certainly heaved a sigh of relief once the shoot was successfully completed!

The Lunch Box is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. But Karan Johar who is presenting the film wont be able to make it for the festival to Toronto as he has prior commitments.

When contacted, Karan confirms the news saying, “I am very upset about it, but nothing is in my hands because I can’t overlook prior commitments. Starring Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, JAB TAK HAI JAAN will release in Romania with subtitles on October 18th, 2013. The blockbuster film had a worldwide release on November 13th 2012 .

Corina
For Corina Saebels, the night of July 19th, 1991 started just like any other. She and a male friend are stargazing in her backyard when they feel a sudden deep vibration. In the sky, they see a boomerang shaped spacecraft, the size of a football field, moving closer. Panicked, the friend runs inside the house, leaving Corina alone under the hovering ship. She is paralyzed with fear. Minutes later, when she’s finally able to move, Corina runs into the house to find her friend. He is very anxious and wants to know where she’s been, telling her he’s been searching for her outside for the last 45 minutes. Once again, Corina can’t account for the missing time. She decides to call the UFO reporting site in BC and learns that 16 people have reported the sighting. She talks to a second UFOBC investigator and discovers the scars on her body are tell-tale marks of an alien abduction. The news is terrifying and sets off a series of flashbacks that change her life forever.
Stephenville Lights
On January 8, 2008 residents from rural Stephenville, Texas witness a series of extraordinary, unexplained sightings. Steve Allen, a business owner and long-time private pilot, along with two close friends, suddenly notice strange lights moving quickly across the sky. Allen estimates the lights are about 3,000 feet above the ground and they are producing a strange strobe-like effect, rapidly reconfiguring from a horizontal to a vertical pattern. The group is mesmerized. They’ve never seen anything like it and they become more awestruck when they see the lights are attached to a huge aircraft. When it appears a second time, it is being chased by F-16s. Steve has never seen anything so big move so fast. In another part of town, three Erath County police officers witness the same event. What could it possibly be? The men report the event to the local airport and the military. The authorities deny there was anything in the sky that night. The witnesses know differently and Steve Allen makes it his mission to find out the truth.
Bucks County
April 2008, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Denise Murter, middle aged mother of two, hears mysterious noises in the middle of the night. Searching her backyard, she sees a large air craft hovering above her. Denise is certain it’s a UFO. When other residents of Bucks County see a similar craft and Denise has a second sighting, UFO investigators believe Denise’s experience may be one of Pennsylvania’s most important UFO sightings. But when Denise has a third sighting and claims to see strange, sparkling objects falling from the spacecraft, investigators become skeptical. Then a seventeen year old sighting of a spacecraft in the woods of Florida lays to rest any doubts that Denise has been telling the truth.
