Are you considering a bathroom overhaul this year? Just like everything in life, décor trends have evolved time and time again.

Bathroom décor has come full circle and has gone from the Victorian decadence era to the glamorous art décor of the 30s. The 1950s flair, 1960s sensationalism and the flower power of the 70s have also come and gone and are now considered retro designs in today’s modern era.

Deciding on one of the many options can be difficult. However, with lots of planning and the right inspiration, getting the look you want in your bathroom can be achieved.

“Tile Africa’s website allows customers to generate their own mood boards to get an idea of what products look great together as well as what their project will cost,” says Debra Retief Marketing Manager at Tile Africa. Pinterest is also considered a great tool to discover when researching the latest décor trends.

Debra Retief shares five top bathroom trends to consider when doing your research.

Mix it up

Gone are the days where one tile in one colour is used throughout an area. Nowadays, interest is created by mixing different tiles. “The colours used to create this effect can be the same or different, the only important aspect to consider when combining different tiles is that they need to complement each other,” says Retief.

The safest option is to mix similar shades that blend together beautifully for a harmonious look.

Combine a tile with an encaustic pattern that reminds one of times gone by with a neutral wood-look tile. “This combination works especially well in the bathroom where soft tones take the lead. The mixing of the two tiles creates a very unique look that results in a tranquil atmosphere,” she says.

Large tiles are also being mixed with smaller tiles, either of the same or in a contrasting colour.

“Mosaics crafted from ceramic, glass, natural materials or metal can be used amongst plainer wall tiles to create both visual and textural interest,” says Retief.

Clever water control

Say goodbye to basic shower and basin taps, and consider user-friendly fixtures.

Modern shower heads now save water as they reduce water consumption without affecting the water pressure and amount of water delivered. These not only promote sustainability but are also aesthetically appealing, making them a good choice for the eco-friendly bathroom.

Dual flush toilets have also become more popular and can save an average of three litres per flush. These toilets have a split flush button that gives you a choice of pressing the smaller button for a light flush, or the larger button for more substantial flush.

Chic spa bathrooms

As modern living becomes ever more frenetic, homes are required to be more than just living space. Design trends, as diverse as they are, share a move towards transforming the home into a haven and this is no more evident than in the bathroom.

Draw design inspiration from nature and bring tranquillity in your bathroom by including plants. “Freestanding baths are a great option for a spa bathroom as they help set the mood for rest and relaxation,” says Retief.

Terrific tiles:

Tiles have been freed from their traditional frame and now include geometric options. The hexagon shape is now popular and comes in designs such as slate, marble, wood-look, patterned, plain plus large and small formats.

Inkjet tiles are also the latest rage and now take wood where wood hasn’t gone before – to the bathroom. These wood-look tiles can be used as flooring or cladding and are ideal for the bathroom as they are water resistant and won’t warp like real wood.

Colour it in:

Colour has also made a big comeback and the clever use of brighter hues is definitely a growing trend in bathroom décor. “If you don’t want to add too much colour in your bathroom, insert small doses in seasonal exciting colours such as yellow, red, green or blue. Décor accessories such as glass vases, scented candles, storage baskets and liquid hand soap are available in seasonal colours and are fairly inexpensive to replace,” says Retief.

While bold can be beautiful, it’s not for everyone. You will still see a lot of white and neutral shades but even those will be combined with bright accents in creative ways.
