Change in Regents Scholarship
The Regents Scholarship Program provides for all or a portion of tuition costs for eligible employees enrolled in the University’s credit-bearing courses. The scholarship now covers:

- 75% of the tuition cost for all other eligible employees.

Mandatory COI Training for PHS-Funded Investigators
PHS issued updated conflict of interest regulations for existing and new PHS-funded researchers beginning late this summer. All current PHS investigators responsible for “design, conduct or reporting” of research must undergo conflict of interest training including a component describing the new regulations, and again every four years.  Review the training applicable to you at: http://www.ospa.umn.edu/PHSFCOI.html and complete before August 24, 2012.

No PI Meetings During July/August
Like previous years, there will be no PI meetings during July and August because the U closes its fiscal year books on June 30th and final accounting information for June/July is delayed, and summer schedules are variable. June meetings will provide account information through May. If you have budget questions about June, July or August, please contact your accountant. Regular PI meetings will resume in September and will include information through August.

Tech Tips & New

Update Your Symantec
Effective July 4, Symantec AntiVirus (SAV), the anti-virus software used on all EpiCH PCs, will no longer be supported by the vendor. It needs to be replaced with the newer Symantec EndPoint Protection (SEP).  EpiHelp has pushed an update for this out to most PCs at the office, but PCs at home will need to be updated manually. Please make sure that your computer has the new software, either yourself or through EpiHelp. Symantec Endpoint Protection is available at no cost both for PCs owned by the U,  faculty, staff and students.

To check which anti-virus product is on your PC. Look for the little yellow shield icon in the lower right of your screen, then hover your mouse over it until its name pops up. If it doesn’t say ‘Symantec Endpoint Protection’ then you need the update. For more information, contact EpiHelp at (612) 624-9500, or epihelp@umn.edu.

Moodle is Mobile!
On-the-go access to Moodle courses just got easier. The latest upgrade added a mobile interface that enables students to access Moodle course content on their mobile devices including:
– taking a quiz and checking scores
– viewing and replying to discussion forum posts
– viewing videos

To switch between the standard and mobile interfaces, select the”Switch” link at bottom of the mobile screen.  This mobile interface is a new feature and feedback and ideas for improvement are welcome. Share your ideas on the discussion board, MoodleTalk.

U of M public health researchers lead effort to find genetic proof of coronary artery disease risk
U of M SPH researchers, led by Weihong Tang, Ph.D., M.S., M.D., have reported two high-signal genetic markers correlated with coronary artery disease (CAD) that should help define genetic fingerprints that can signal an increased risk of developing the disease… “Our goal was to see if there were genetic markers or signals within the tests that could indicate which patients were at higher risk for coronary artery disease. What we found was that within our sample, there were some highly expressive genetic markers that indeed signaled an increased risk.” said Tang.
