Cosmetic surgery remains a billion dollar industry and new data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons backs that.  We, at Specialist Cosmetic Surgery, can also attest to this to. However, while the industry overall continues to see growth, the types of procedures patients have chosen since the start of the new millennium are changing.

The Statistics

According to the annual plastic surgery procedural statistics, there were 15.9 million surgical and minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2015, a two percent increase over 2014.

Since 2000, overall procedures have risen 115 percent. While traditional facial procedures and breast augmentation are still very popular among patients, cosmetic surgeons are noticing “more diversity” in the areas of the body patient are choosing to address.

According to Dr. Bernard Beldholm with Specialist Cosmetic Surgery patients now have more options than ever before.

“Thanks to advances in technology, patients’ have endless opportunities to choose from—whether it’s surgical or non-surgical,” stated Dr. Beldholm. “As surgeons, we realize not all procedure fits all. Today, it’s now much easier perform to accommodate patients in order to help them to achieve the look they desire.”

Lifts Lead the List

There once was a time when “lifts” were closely associated with facelifts only. However, that’s no longer the case. Although, facelifts are still extremely popular, patients are now seeking other popular lifts as well. This includes:

There once was a time when “lifts” were closely associated with facelifts only. However, that’s no longer the case. Although, facelifts are still extremely popular, patients are now seeking other popular lifts as well. This includes:

Breast lifts: The latest stats show that the demand for this procedure has increased by 89 percent. According to Dr. Beldholm, a breast lift (or ‘mastopexy’) restores fullness and projection to the breasts, improving shape and position without increasing size.

Buttock lifts: A buttock lift (also known as belt lipectomy) improves and/or removes excess, sagging buttock and thigh skin that has developed as a result of weight loss, aging and gravity, or genetics. The demand for this procedure has reportedly increased by a whopping 252 percent!

Lower body lifts: A body lift removes dimples and lifts the sagging or drooping appearance that can affect the abdominal area, buttocks and inner and outer thigh areas. In 2015, the demand for this procedure increased by up to 3,973 percent.

Upper arm lifts: An arm lift or ‘brachioplasty’ removes sagging skin and reshapes your arms with a firmer and more youthful appearance. According to the latest stats, this procedure increased by 4,959 percent in 2015.

Top 5 Cosmetic Surgical and Minimally-Invasive Procedures

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, while procedures like upper arm lifts and lower body lifts have shown substantial growth, for the first time since at least 2000, facelifts slipped out of the top 5 most-performed procedures last year, giving way to tummy tucks. Of the 1.7 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2015, the top 5 were:

Breast augmentation: This procedure enhances as well as restores the natural beauty of your breasts. Accentuating a woman’s curves and enhancing the shape, size and symmetry of their breasts is one of the benefits of this procedure.

Liposuction: This procedure slims and reshapes specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits and improving your body contours and proportion.

Nose reshaping: This procedure enhances facial harmony and the proportions of your nose. It can also correct impaired breathing caused by structural defects in the nose.

Eyelid surgery: This procedure removes the fatty deposits and excess skin that can give the appearance of puffiness, as well as reducing sagging and wrinkles around the eyes. This surgery can also correct droopiness of the lids.

Tummy tuck: Tummy tucks can profoundly reshape the abdominal area and help individuals recapture a more sculpted appearance.

Top Non-Surgical Procedures

At Specialist Cosmetic Surgery, we, like many other cosmetic facilities, have also seen an increase in the number of patients requesting minimally-invasive procedures—especially those that combat the signs of aging. In 2015, these were the most in demand non-surgical procedures:

Botulinum Toxin Type A:  Botox can be used to help smooth crow’s feet, forehead furrows, frown lines and skin bands on the neck.

Soft Tissue Fillers: Dermal fillers can be used to plump thin lips, enhance shallow contours, soften facial creases and wrinkles and improve the appearance of recessed scars.

Chemical Peel: This procedure can help improve acne scars, liver spots, fine lines and wrinkles, freckles, sun-damaged skin, irregular skin pigmentation and scaly patches.

Laser hair removal: Laser hair removal is a non-invasive technique that uses highly concentrated light to penetrate hair follicles. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle to inhibit future hair growth.

Microdermabrasion: Microdermabrasion skin rejuvenation is used to treat light scarring, discoloration and sun damage and stretch marks.

Most Requested Cosmetic Procedure in 2015

Whether you blame Kim Kardashian or Nicki Minaj, the latest stats showed that 2015 was another year of the rear, as procedures focusing on the derriere dominated surgical growth. Buttock implants were the fastest growing type of cosmetic surgery in 2015, and, overall, there was a buttock procedure every 30 minutes of every day, on average.

Here are the top procedures related to the bottom in 2015:

Buttock augmentation with fat grafting (14,705 procedures, up 28 percent from 2014 to 2015)

Buttock lift (4,767 procedures up 36 percent from 2014 to 2015)

Buttock implants (2,540 procedures up 36 percent from 2014 to 2015)
