Try telling your small chested friends that you hate having big tits… And you usually won’t get much sympathy! While large breasts are desirable for a big percentage of women actually having large breasts comes with a cost attached.

It might be your health, or just the way you feel that they’re holding you back, but large breasts don’t always equal a heap of fun.

Meet Jenna – Our breast reduction before and after

Jenna might just be the poster girl for breast reduction surgery – at least for Specialist Cosmetic Surgery! Coming in to chat to a plastic surgeon about the size of her breasts was years in the making – she had literally been debating undergoing surgery for how to reduce breast size for 10 years.

Because Jenna didn’t rush into surgery she had plenty of time to do her research, carefully seek out the right surgeon, and investigate how much she’d be out of pocket after breast reduction Medicare and private health insurance rebates.

Jenna’s breasts back before her surgery were an E cup, a size that had been fairly stable the majority of her adult life. While they were a lot perkier when she was a teen, there was now a significant amount of sag which made her feel like they were pendulous and swinging back and forth.

During the past couple of years, she had decided that enough was enough and she wanted a cute new bust, and not these old lady looking bags! While she enjoyed having large breasts hers were just too big and getting too saggy.

Here are just some of the reasons that Jenna, and women like her, and women like you, choose to undergo breast reduction surgery.

The back pain… It’s constant!

When there’s two great big weighted sacks strapped to the front of you at all times it can really put a strain on your back – no matter how good a bra you manage to get your hands on. While back pain can usually be managed with the use of over the counter medicines, it can come to a point in your life where you just think ‘What is the point in constantly being in pain?’

And how about headaches and migraines?

Similarly to the way in which back pain can occur, so too can headaches and migraines become recurring. The strain put on your upper back, shoulders, neck, and head, caused by the weight of your breasts has the potential to trigger headaches and migraines. These can be quite severe and debilitating for some people.

Not to mention postural problems…

Do you know what your ideal posture is supposed to look like? Do you know how much your own posture differs from the ideal? Your breasts may be making you hunch over, which is only worse for your back, can restrict your ease of breathing, and give you poor muscle form around the core.

Bra straps that dig in

Since your bra has to hold up all that weight it means that there is going to be a lot of pressure on your bra straps. This can often mean that they’re uncomfortable and dig in, or you can’t wear cute bras because you need the wide strap support that “old lady bras” offer. Some of you might never even leave your sports bras.

For women with large breasts good bras are essential to being comfortable, and even when you’ve got good ones they can only really do so much for you!

There can be rashes too

Many women will mention that they suffer from itchy, sore and unsightly rashes underneath their breasts, where it either rubs too much or gets too sweaty. While a bra can sometimes prevent this from happening, it’s not always the case! If you fail the pencil test – hey, you might even be able to fit three or more pencils under there! – then this may be an issue for you.

It’s hard to be a sportswoman

One of Jenna’s biggest concerns with her breasts was that they were holding her back from performing in sports – and without pain. You larger boobed ladies out there may well be familiar with the old double sports bra trick to try and keep the girls from going their own way when you’re trying to workout, run, or play netball.

In fact, for many with large breasts doing certain sporting activities is just an impossibility. Any jumping about movements are just too difficult, which means a no to most team and cardio sports.

Your bust looks years older than the rest of you

While your face might say 30, your boobs might say 40! Luckily, most of the time our breasts are under wraps – no one is going to think that you’re ten years older than you are when they’re looking at you in clothes. But while this is true, it’s a different story when your top comes off.

Weighty breasts can seriously age you. You may be concerned if you don’t currently have a partner, what a potential mate is going to think when you finally move your activities to the bedroom. You might think that despite your current partner’s protestations that they love you just the way you are that it would be great to feel younger again. You might just feel like doing something to make you feel good for a change.

Your breasts are pendulous and tend to flop about

Perky breasts? What are those?! If you’re checking out your flat chested friends and bemoaning the fact that they seem to have no sag, despite the fact that they’ve had breasts for the last 20 years, then you wouldn’t be alone.

While some women experience little to no sag across the years (generally those with a B cup or smaller), some women can see the difference in the level of their bobs literally on a month by month basis.

It’s an unfortunate fact of life, but one that can be tackled!

Your nipples are pointing downwards

Not only are your large breasts drooping, which may be annoying enough on its own, your nipples may be headed that way too. In fact, your nipples can end up pointing south, as if to say ‘Hey, what’s that thing there that you dropped on the floor?’” Sweeties I didn’t drop anything, so can you please get yourselves back into position!?

A breast reduction gives you the opportunity to reposition your nipples higher up on your breast, in a natural forward facing position, which will make your breasts look infinity more perky.

You dislike the size of them

Wait, your breasts, or your nipples? Large breasts can be super annoying, whether it’s the deep stares from both men and women (hey, here’s my face guys!), or spending a fortune on supportive bras, sometimes they’re just too big.

Your nipples might also balloon in size due to the largeness of your breasts which you might find embarrassing. You can always make your nipples smaller during your breast reduction too, which is a relieving thought.

You can’t wear what you want

Backless dresses. Boob tubes. Deep necklines. String bikinis. Anything without a bra. Having large breasts seriously limits your wardrobe choices. In fact, they may also be causing you to have to wear a size bigger clothing than you would really be.

If you’ve always dreamed of all the different outfits that you could wear if your boobs weren’t just so damn big and you didn’t have to wear a bra every single second of every single day – then a breast reduction might be for you.

About Jenna’s breast reduction

Jenna was keen to go down to a natural breast size and reduce the sag in her boobs so she opted to reduce her size to a C cup – a change of 3 cup sizes. Dr. Beldholm used Crisalix 3D imaging software to show her what the results of her breast reduction surgery would look like in the lead up to her surgery.

Dr. Beldholm uses the Superior Pedicle Technique when performing breast reductions which means incisions are made in a keyhole shape around the areola with a base extending down all the way to the fold underneath the breast. It really is a breast reduction and lift. He chooses to use this particular technique because of the reduced scarring and better final shape of the breast.

With this technique excess tissue is cut from the bottom of the breast and the areola and nipple is repositioned higher up on the chest. This means that you will have surgical scars around your areola and in a vertical line down extending to the bottom of each breast.

As well as removing excess breast tissue, Dr. Beldholm may also liposuction out excess fat from either breast.

For Jenna’s operation, Dr. Beldholm removed 390g of breast tissue from her right breast and 324g of breast tissue from her left breast, along with 100g of fat. Most of us do not have perfectly symmetrical boobs, hence the differences in how much tissue was removed from each breast.

The surgery itself took around 3 hours to perform in the hospital, while Jenna was under general anaesthetic.

Jenna’s breast reduction recovery

Jenna has now fully recovered from her breast reduction surgery and is thrilled with the results.

Jenna chose to stay overnight in hospital to make sure that everything went fine from the surgery. The day following the surgery was difficult as she was very sore, but the pain subsided over the following two weeks. Dr. Beldholm instructed her to wear her compression bra for at least three weeks after her operation, and they had a follow up appointment at one week to check on her progress.

Although at first Jenna was concerned that her breasts were too firm, after a couple of months they settled completely and were back to feeling nice and natural.

She followed the doctor’s instructions to a T, which included sleeping on her back while her breasts healed and taking the prerequisite weeks of time off from working her job.

3 months following the surgery she was very pleased with her breasts. She still wears the support garment while sleeping because she feels that it’s good for her breasts to keep them in shape. She’s finally able to get out and play the sports she loves and go running without having to worry about anything too.

For Jenna, the only thing that she wishes was that she had have bitten the bullet sooner and come in for surgery! Thinking back about all the years that she had to deal with her boobs makes her even more happy with her decision, and when any of the girls ask her about it she recommends it to them in a heartbeat.

While she wasn’t an advocate for “unnecessary” surgery before, she now feels that if going under the knife is going to make someone look and feel better then she’s all for it. Many of her friends have complained to her about their breasts after years of breastfeeding, and she is happy to recommend Dr. Beldholm to them if they’re considering a breast lift or breast lift with implants.
