Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) is a state university established by Government of Maharashtra. The reason behind writing this blog posts are several. There are many people from in and around Maharashtra who wish to opt for a course for career and academic upgradation, for self employment and for knowledge and life long learning purpose. Imagine, a university who offer courses for Army professional, ITBP personnel thats too at just rs. 350 per annum. That way, this is a truly non profit university and committed education.

The good thing about YCMOU is, it is much better than any state reputed universities like University of Madras and Pune University. They have well prepared study materials, they have many career and job oriented courses and of course they have course that suits to everyone- general public, young, people in need of elf employment, working teachers and public servants and a life long learner. Be it course in two wheeler maintenance, be it B.Ed and M.Ed, be it a specialised BA in customer care, BA in transport studies, BA in police studies to M.Phil and Ph.D. The courses are very cheap and affordable to anybody. Imagine, one can do BA in around Rs. 2000 per year including all expenses.

The bad thing is: It has an "open" tag so those who do not have any knowledge about how open university, normally assumed that in Open University, you easily gets degrees (by that way there is malpractices in most of the Indian universities). Further, like many other government universities, they are poor in responding through email and yes, few centres involve in malpractices.

Still, I feel those who are looking for an accredited, accepted and approved qualifications, this university is a good options. Perhaps, one day I may decide to pursue a course from this institute (may be M.Sc. subject communication or B.Sc. Horticulture or something else). Its website is rather complicated and incomplete but better than many universities.

Please note YCMOU does not offer engineering and architecture degree, diploma and masters programme after AICTE ban in 2009. Any university cannot offer it and if offered, those are unrecognized. However, any degree in engineering awarded by YCMOU prior to 2009 stands valid. Also for current year, UGC DEB has continued its approval. (I have yet not verified whether its MBA is approved by AICTE).

Introduction: The university was established on 1st July, 1989 through Act XX of 1989 of the Maharashtra State Legislature, justly named after Yashwantrao Chavan, Maharashtra’s great political leader and builder of modern Maharashtra. It is one of the best open university in the country and recently, one of its student Kaustubh Divegaonkar came first in the state in Civil Services Exam conducted by UPSC. It proves that open and distance learning institutes are not bad in quality. Yes, some of the university's centre like R V Pawar High school and Jr. college, Kmatghar, Bhiwandi Thane are involved in the malpractices like helping to copy in the exam and all but this means not that the university itself is bad.  It offers more than 100 innovative courses including certificate, Diploma to Ph.D. Study centre: All over Maharashtra, students can give exam at any of these centres. -
