Without further ado, here’s our interview with Crane & Lion founder, John Udelson.

If someone is unfamiliar with Crane & Lion what would you want them to know about the brand?

Our design philosophy stems from the desire to provide women with resilient clothing that is also chic and sophisticated. Our hand-chosen fabrics and functional designs provide for optimal movement, comfort and support. Understated yet interesting details merge to create stylish, versatile and quality clothing. Our performance wear combined with our fashion-forward pieces will effortlessly transition you from the gym, to meetings, to social engagements, and back.

What inspired you to start an activewear line?

Being a runner and more recently involved in the yoga community, I wanted to make a career shift and focus my efforts on the things that make me happy. I always had an interest in fashion and clothing, so I decided launching Crane & Lion would be the perfect combination for me.

How did you ultimately make the switch from one career path to another?

In my former career I was in the valet parking/hospitality  business.  I sold my company in 2013 and it was a perfect opportunity to start a new adventure.   Coming from a service business I was intrigued by starting something different by creating a brand/product that was consumer facing.

How do you come up with the designs?

I believe in the saying that less is more. Simple, clean, streamlined. This is not always easy to live by or design by, but we typically pull one overpowering element of beauty from either nature, architecture, people or another area of fine art and use that as a starting point.

What’s your favorite piece from the collection?

I’m always amazed by how well our pieces within the line are received. I feel most excited about our moto jacket and wide leg pant.  I think both pieces are stylish and extremely versatile.

Where’s your favorite place to practice yoga?

I know many amazing yoga instructors and I am inspired by them on a daily basis. They lead me to find my own inner calm during a busy week or help give me strength and positivity to continue growing Crane & Lion into what I hope will inspire others.

Can you talk about the lines quality and aesthetic?

There is a sense of strength and masculinity, with its angular seaming, but a very feminine flattering fit. The colors also mimic the play on strength and feminine beauty, ranging from a deep marlin blue, that has power and saturation to a dusty soft mauve, called Nirvana. The pieces can be seamless additions to every woman’s closet and take them from their early morning workout to dinner with friends.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention?

Our brand is targeting the active woman who wants her clothing to be chic and versatile.  Historically activewear and fashion have been segmented, but that’s not how our customers live their everyday life.  We work with inspiration and components from the fashion world that can be woven into our customer’s fitness wear. Our articles of clothing are created for the customer who wants to wear Crane & Lion clothing to run errands, attend a fitness class, meet friends for lunch or spend the day around town or the home.

Can you tell us about Crane & Lion’s involvement with various charities?
It is very important to Crane & Lion to be able to give back.  We are partnering with three organizations we feel a strong, personal connection to. The partners include Wide Horizons for Children, Big Sisters Association and The One Hundred foundation for Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Cancer Center. For the MGH One Hundred, we have created a limited-edition original tight.
