As expected, Wednesday’s National Signing Day was a busy time in East Texas.
Athletes from across the region signed national letters of intent with the colleges of their choice, headlined by a large group of senior football players who are bound for Division I FBS programs.
Thirty-two East Texans signed with FBS programs, a number that is a significant increase from 17 in 2013. North Texas signed five players from East Texas, including one grayshirt, while ULM signed four.
Baylor signed Mount Pleasant receiver K.D. Cannon and Liberty-Eylau athlete Davion Hall, who are widely considered the region’s top recruits in this class. Texas A&M signed three players widely considered state top 100 recruits in Lufkin receiver Jamal Jeffery, Gilmer linebacker Josh Walker, and Longview defensive tackle Zaycoven Henderson, who enrolled in College Station at the semester. Texas also signed three state top 100 athletes in Longview receiver Dorian Leonard, Jasper offensive lineman Terrell Cuney, and Newton athlete Kevin Shorter.
One interesting note is Kansas’ ability to scoop two quality interior linemen from East Texas. The Jayhawks signed Nacogdoches Under Armour All-American Jacob Bragg, one of the nation’s top centers, in addition to Lufkin defensive tackle D.J. Williams, who during the recruiting process received offers from Miami, Missouri, Oklahoma, and North Texas.
