So perhaps you’ve decided you want to take on a self-build project for a beautiful timber frame home – now how do you tackle finding land to make your dream a reality? Well, according to research, many people interested in self-building a home still aren’t aware of the Self Build and Custom Housebuilding Act, which came into force on the 1st April this year.

In fact, 77 per cent of the UK are still none the wiser that this new legislation, also known as the Right to Build Act, means councils have to keep a register of those looking to buy land in the area for self-building purposes.

This register is partnered with upcoming changes in the Housing and Planning Bill which will require local councils to make sure they have enough plots to meet their recorded demand.

Property Wire reported that the new research also found that while 12.5 per cent were expected to show an interest in self-building, only two per cent have declared the intention to self-build within the next 12 months.

The problem, according to key figures in the self-build industry, is the lack of general public awareness – something that the likes of The National Custom & Self Build Association are looking to change.

Raymond Connor, CEO of UK self-build portal BuildStore, said: “The research shows there is a significant gap between those interested in self-build and those who intend to take specific action to progress self-build projects. However, it is likely this sector will soon grow once more people are aware the main challenge of finding a suitable plot of land has now been simplified.”
