If building your own timber frame home is high on your agenda, did you know that many councils have a self-build register set up to help connect people just like you to local authorities who are keen to promote this kind of housing provision?
The idea behind the list, according to the Local Self-Build Register website, is to allow for better communication between local councils and self-builders, to make it easier for them to find suitable plots of lands and any partnerships that can be entered into to encourage this type of building.
Self-building is an attractive option for housing provision for the government, providing individuals with affordable housing, as well as developing small plots of land which wouldn’t be cost-effective for large-scale house builders to develop. There are many schemes, such as the Community Right to Build, and finance offers for self-builders from a specially created pot of £30 million to encourage more people to consider this process.
Last week, Purbeck District Council set up their own self-build register, looking to connect with those in Dorset who want to self-build to better understand their needs and find how they can support the projects.
Cllr Michael Lovell, Housing Spokesman for the council said this: “Purbeck District Council is committed to supporting access to both affordable and market housing for local people, and that includes supporting people wishing to build their own home.”
With its proximity to the home of Southern Timber Frame on the edge of the New Forest in Southampton, those thinking about building their own homes should be sure to look into timber frame construction with this great, family-owned local business.
